  • I think people use cheques when they don't yet have money in their account that they are hoping to be there by the time the cheque clears.

We have quite a lot of cheques at our store, and they are slower than other forms of payment - except C&P when people press 'cancel' instead of 'clear' when they enter a wrong pin number - v. annoying!

I hate it when a completely townie-looking ne'er-do-well comes in want a £300 gold chain and whips out 'their' cheque book - the words 'stolen' and 'bounced/cancelled' cheque spring to mind! I even had one woman once trying to make a £200 purchase with a cheque guarantee card of £100 and telling my because the hologram said £100 three times on it the limit was £300!!! It took all my self-control not to laugh out loud!

It always infuriates me when the person in front writes out a cheque then brings out a debit card to use as the cheque guarantee - how annoying!

My wife has OCD and cant cope with punching numbers into a chip & Pin machine, so she has to use a cheque and card. Its not really her fault that the cheque guarantee card is also a debit card. The thing is, peoples lives are often complicated and sometimes theres a lot more behind why people do what they do - so I try not to get infuriated by other peoples behaviour as much as possible. Not easy though, I'll grant you.
  • I work for a building society and have inside knowledge of this cheque situation. The one and ONLY reason companies are stopping accepting cheques is money. The companies bankers charge per cheque credit this is around 50p per cheque. Where as a debit card transaction can cost under 12p each to process, depending on size of the company. So if they can have 4 debit card transactions for the same price as 1 cheque credit.....

Excuses excuses and yet more excuses.

Is it really so much more difficult to say "I can" rather than saying "I can't"?

Have you had experience of living with a partner with mental health issues? Its not excuses, just an invitation to consider that perhaps theres a good reason why people do the things they do rather than be irritated by them all the time.

She does not have to use chip and pin. She could get a chip and signature card from the bank. It could make things easier for her.

    It's the future.

I haven't used a cheque book for nearly 5 years.

Won't be long before they're consigned to history. Good thing IMO.

If they had enough food to live on I'm sure they could. But that's not always the case for some people.
