I have tried to open an online account but it says it is not available to me.

    Same.

Which makes me think were being billed at standard rate until we get access to our online accounts. I will give them a call tommorow. The only reason I switched was because of the £180.

EDF & BG worked out the same for me with my staff discount.

I have changed the title of this thread and explained the reason. It has now developed into a bigger and wider concern about the billing process.

I have also written to EDF's Legal Department to seek clarification. Unfortunately, the solicitor concerned is on leave till monday.

My personal very strong feeling ,is that EDF has an internal intermediate process for set up onto this tariff. That should in no way affect the intention of the customer's switch to the contracted tariff and that they should automatically backdate all records to the rate signed up to,once this 'registration' is completed.

As it stands, that internal process will have varied time periods depending on workload, admin problems etc.and is open ended.

It shouldn't come down to some Customer's being allowed goodwill gestures. :(
  • At the risk of being labelled a racist, they're French, what do you expect? ;) Seriously, I have never heard of this happening with other companies, it's not as if it's our fault they can't get the switch-over of gas and electric co-ordinated, is it? And, while we are at it, why the heck does it take so long to switch in the first place?? I moved my telephone line rental from BT and it was an almost instantaneous transfer IIRC. Why is gas and electric so different, it's the same bloody principle, i.e. same pipes (wires!) and the same gas and electric just a different billing company.

My electric goes live on 27/12/10 and gas on 4/1/11 so the extra charge won't be massive but it's the principle that's at stake here.

The concern is only partly the difference between the timescale for gas and electricity. Of more concern is the confirmation of the 'registration'. That is the open ended clause, which could affect billing on gas and electricity dependant upon when they finally get back to you.

It's such a fundamental issue regarding switching, I can only think it is an error, but it needs nipping in the bud very quickly.

    Possibly.:D

To be honest, the people who I dealt with in Legal and PR on the other matters, were excellent. They accepted with good grace that the Welcome Bonus wording was confusing and not as intened by the Marketing Team.

I don't know about this one. It's very confusing to think that they could operate a switching procedure without applying the contracted rate to any subsequent billing.

I think they would quickly fall foul of Ofgem and the Unfair Contract Conditions Act, if the matter was referred.

I suspect there is some sort of communications breakdown between an internal operating procedure becoming an ingrained process to the front line.I think the terms and conditions were probably drafted to cope with a situation where a bill is temporarily produced before this internal procedure has fully run its course.

    We will see. :)

Yes that's it and I've since proved that it works but Backfoot's solution will be far better.

But thanks to you because it was your post that made me call them and get it too.

    Brilliant chaps. :j

They can't operate a procedure based on whether people complain or not. Faced with opposition, they obviously back down, knowing it's untenable.

    Very good ammunition.
