  • Thought about a sheet, but wouldn't it just ice up and stick to the window? Would you use just a normal sheet or something specificly brought for a car?

why not just buy a sheet to go over the windscreen (ok so now very mse but better than a cracked window)

£4.99 for a car cover in lidl this week

if the car isnt covered i just start the car and scrape around the old fashioned way.
i keep deicer in the car(non aerosol) for bad days or to clear it if it starts refreezing.
Im quite lucky as my car has a set up with an extra electric coolant pump.
this pumps hot coolant from the engine to the heater matrix for fast heating
  • Hi Custardly. Unfortunately we're not near a lidl.

What is a non aerosol de icer? I've not seen that anywhere... does it work any better?

just deicer in a hand pump
if find the aerosol deicers useless and wastefull
you get a short thick spray most times
with the hand one you get more control and it sprays where you want/need

I've found the same. The aerosols are pretty useless (not to mention they freeze your hands when you hold them!)

The sprays are really good and seem to work a lot quicker. I haven't got any yet this year as haven't found i've needed it. I have one of these which is really good.

  • Thanks for that freakyogre.... I'm going to pop to our Halfords in a bit and get one of those.

Custardly, I shall definately look out for that de-icer, the aerosol one is pretty useless.

    Thanks for the useful replies!

A hot water bottle on the dashboard helps but dont pour water outside - if you get it in your locks they will seize up too! not a good idea - run the car till its all clear and warm is the best way.
Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j

I spray a thin line of de-icer at the very top of my screen as I get back from dog walking, then 30 mins later when I'm washed and dressed for work the whole screen is de-iced.

I have had it re-freeze once probably in comparable weather to now, come to think about it!!
  • Does anyone else just scrape?! :)

as I'm only 5'4' and I drive a 7 seater zafira I can't reach up far enough to scrape much off .I use the hot water bottle method on the dash board.Mind you this weather the car stays off the road and me inside the house .No way am I risking life and limb to go on the roads.Enough folk in hospitals already withoput me making it worse.as for walking I have to use a stick to get about and I have a metal gadget that screws on the end of it for gripping that my cousin sent me from Canada but I try to stay in until I can see the proper pavement to walk on
