De-Icing Car

Hows this for a money saving idea!

I just poured the hot water from my condenser tumble drier onto the front windscreen to de-ice the car! Saved boiling kettle or using de-icer lol!

I guess it's fine if you want to end up with a cracked windscreen - which may not be so MSE.

How "hot" is the water... I assume only luke warm which is fine.

NEVER pour boiling hot water (or anything close to boiling) on a car windowscreen... unless you like potentially having a huge crack down your windows...

(cross posted with redlady_1.... great minds ;) )

Surely, pouring hot or boiling water over the windscreen is just asking for it to crack?
    Sometimes I wonder...
"why is that frisbee getting bigger?"
    ...and then it hits me

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
  • It was warm enough to defrost but not boiling!
  • I agree the water from tumble is warm not boiling so will do the job BUT surely using the tumble in the first place isn't very MSE;)

  • I put very hot [not boiling] water in an old 2l pop bottle; pop it on the dashboard and go back indoors for breakfast and a cuppa; when I come out the heat has warmed the screen and taken the edge off the freezing chill of the car and bob's your uncle. No risk of cracking anything....
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

Warm enough to re-freeze completely solid within 2 minutes?

IMO there is no fast way to clear a windscreen (unless you have a Ford), just scrape the ice, turn on the internal heater and wait.

Bare in mind also, if the car has been left warming up, for one thing you're not allowed to leave the car running on public land and go indoors, but also your coolant may be warm (guage in car shows normal) but your oil definitely won't be, so TAKE IT EASY or your engine wear will be increased dramatically.

C'MON! Let's get this debt sorted!!
  • Sambucas thats a good idea.

At the moment the car is taking a good 20 minutes to de-ice. De-icer is too expensive for the amount we need, as the ice is so thick. I can't scrap it off too much as I have arthritis in my hands. So was looking for a quick handy idea.

I emptied the water into the washing up bowl and left for 10 mins and you could put your hands in it lol!

As for using the tumble, I get your point, but I only use every 2 days, then turn the heating down as it blows out a good amount of heat! I have condensation on the windows too, so want to avoid too much damp washing hanging around! Sometimes you just can't win :)
  • why not just buy a sheet to go over the windscreen (ok so now very mse but better than a cracked window)
  • tbourner - I don't leave the car unattended, but have noticed it uses a lot of petrol just trying to warm it up and melt the ice.

Can't afford to buy a new Ford though!
