Surely you do not need Jobseekers allowance if you are on a contract!
The contract ends on 13th May , the work we get paid for ends on the 6th May. Holiday pay and completion payment are irrelevant , we're entitled to that regardless.
Fact is we earn nothing between 6th - 13th May . Its a scam.0 -

There's nothing to stop you actually doing some work from the 7th May onwards, or were you just planning on being on the dole from now on?0 -

On the 13th of may we will get paid are last weeks pay plus holiday and completion payment. That's quite a bit to keep you going until you sign on.0 -

It is hardly a scam - you are contracted until 13th May and are technically taking your holiday during the period 6th - 13th May for which you will be paid.
If you earn less than the full amount of JSA you are eligible to receive in that week you can still make a claim for JSA and they will pay you the difference between the amount you have earned and the amount of JSA you would have received. (So long as you are not contracted for more than 16 hours a week, of course and have been actively seeking work in that week). This would be an income based claim rather than a contribution based claim. (Should say that I am in no way an expert on JSA - this is only what I have read on Directgov when I briefly claimed JSA before starting my Census job).
And I presume if you were on a 37 hour contract you are likely to get more holiday pay + completion payment + telephone allowance than you would have had from JSA anyway - unless you have a family and in which case you will likely get Tax Credits etc anyway as someone previously mentioned.

I live in one of the highest unemployment blackspots in the country. Perhaps the recession hasn't hit where you live , but here jobs for 57 year olds aren't exactly abundant.
I've done temporary work before and received holiday pay and been able to make a new claim as soon as the work has finished. It doesn't effect your entitlement to claim , its integrated into your last week's wages.
Jacko , no Census workers will be able to claim anything for the period 6th May to 13th May because technically we are still contracted to the ONS and therefore are not available for work.
Its a scam.0 -

But you're getting more than you would be on JSA anyway.0 -
I don't think you understand. We get paid 1 week in arrears. JSA ended on 6th April . We weren't paid till 15th April. The last payment on 13th May is for the week ending 6th May. But we - those of us who signed off JSA to work on the Census - still have to pay rent and Council Tax for the week ending 13th May , a week for which we earn not a bean0

You can pay that out of the money you will get on May 13th - that's our last week's wages. And then you will still get all your benefits back from 14th May onwards, so I really can't see where you're coming from here.
Just out of interest, which region of England are you from? You said it was a high unemployment area. I'm from Essex and we did have a small recession, but from what I see things do seem to be back to normal here. Anyway, good luck with your job hunt, and at least now you can put this on your CV - the census is very high profile.0 -

No i didn't . I've paid rent and Council Tax from 6th April , and will have to pay rent for the week up to 13th May , for which we're not being paid.
As i've tried to explain , we get paid 1 week in arrears . The payment on 13th May is for the week ending 6th May. The job started on 6th April , but we didn't get paid till 15th April. I still had to pay rent and council tax for the period 6th April to 15th April.
People who have done this job as a little part time earner to boost their pensions or as a second job aren't affected by any of this.
Fortunately , my coordinator fully understands the scam being perpetrated even if nobody here does , so any extra work will be allocated to the 37 hour workers who came off JSA to do the job.
My original post was to advise those in the same situation as myself as to what was going on and to help their case to be allocated any extra work that was going. As it appears there aren't any it has been a waste of time.:)0
