Census Jobs

  • I was looking forward to the end of my collector role - a second full time job to pay for a new high end PC. I knew it was only for a month, but 75 hours a week does get pretty wearing. I might just do the extra days though and get a second graphics card ;D

Has anybody else noticed the con trick being perpetrated upon those of us who have signed off from Jobseekers Allowance to work on the Census ?

We finish work on 6th May , but the contract ends on the 13th May. Obviously we will earn nothing for the period 6th May to !3th May.

But because we are contracted till 13th May , we won't be able to make a new claim for Jobseekers Allowance till that date. All Jobcentres will receive a directive from above telling staff not to allow new claims till 14th May. I'm 99% certain that this is what will happen.

Same thing happened in the 2001 Census. A very cunning ploy by the Government to rob 1,000's of Census workers out of 1 week's benefits.

Anybody having to sign back on should grab the extra couple of days work if its available , its the only money you'll get for the period between 6th and 13th May.

We get paid holiday pay as well.

I'm going to head down an agency and see if they have an extra work.

It actually works in your favour as the contract period is over 5 weeks, thus qualifying you for housing benefit run on and allowing you to claim working tax credits. If it had been only up to 6 may then I don't think you would get these.

Housing benefit run on only applies to those who've had a continuous JSA claim for 6 months or more.

Surely you do not need Jobseekers allowance if you are on a contract!
  • As far as I can see from my contract they should also include some holiday pay which will cover for the easter period and royal wedding & may day bank holidays, heres the relevent bit -

    7. HOLIDAYS
7.1 You are entitled to 5.6 weeks holiday (this includes the usual public holidays in England and Wales) per annum on a pro rata basis to the number of Contractual Hours worked for ONS.

so because we have worked for 4+ weeks, and had the 4 bank holiday days. If I understand it rightly -

On the last payday which should be Friday 13th May we will get paid for the hours we worked between the 30th April & 6th May plus the completion payment, then a payment for the 4 bank holidays & the accrued holiday time for the month or so we have worked

I think the bank holidays are counted as normal working days
