    Phew! What a day!!

    Today we were told the mortgage company turned down our application - we checked our credit reports hurriedly and there's a couple of defaults on there. One on hubby's account was from a bill on our old house that we were billed A YEAR AFTER we moved out (!) and there's two on my report. One was my fault - the bill came last Christmas time and I couldn't pay, so put it off a month, and then we went away in January and I'd forgotten to sort it! So I know I can't do anything about that. The other is from the Woolwich and annoys me - they wouldn't let me change my address because I wasn't on any utility bills (as hubby paid them all). I went in with passport & cash card to prove who I was and offered to log in to my online account then & there to help prove who I was - but even so they still wouldn't accept ME telling them I had moved. I did question whether they'd rather I logged in to my account and transferred all my money to another bank, but even that got no response. SO I stopped using my account (wasn't allowed to close it either due to no proof of address!) as statements etc were still going to my old address. About 4 months later (while I was on holiday in fact) I got a call on my mobile from them saying I had defaulted on paying the overdraft fee (for an overdraft I no longer used or required). We swore a bit but paid it all off over a couple of months - but now it's a big red glaring 8 on my credit report! *why* they couldn't contact me on my mobile to begin with I don't know. So I'm also going to contacting Woolwich to excplain that I don't feel this is all entirely my fault and seeing what they say.

    So anyway, we've now contacted our current mortgage provider who have happily given us a mortgage in principle over the phone & are sending out the things to sign. The 'in principle' refers to the house we're buying being worth the amount we're paying, so they're getting a survey done before they can agree completely. We're wondering though if they might then do a credit check & decide against us? Or would the fact that we already have a mortgage with them (since sept 2005, always paid on time) mean they just 'extend' our current one? Any ideas?

    Nervously fingers crossed...

    Robindobbin - in regards to receiving a mortgage offer from Abbey and how long it take, I have experience of this. Maybe we are unlucky, but it has been extremely stressful and time consuming getting this mortgage offer out. I would personally (as we are having to now) call every day to check progress. We submitted our application mid October and still have not received the offer. It has been approved for at least 2 weeks, just no offer letter. Our solicitor won't exchange contracts unless he has the original either.

    Maybe you will be luckier!

    Well, might as well add myself to the list. Original plan was to exchange somewhere around now and complete on the 14th, but my vendor's mortgage documents aren't in the right place (yet) - as a result it's a case of crossing everything that can be crossed and hoping that we don't get held up more than a few days...
    Finally a happy home (and mortgage) owner...

    As a further note - talked to hubby - they did the credit check there & then and we passed it so :T I can breathe a big sigh of relief.

    Think I may have a couple tonight...:beer:
  • My solicitor says not to hurry our buyer next week and that it should be OK to make plans to exchange AND complete on 21st December. It is going to leave me a nervous wreck for the next fortnight. If it doesn't work out for us on that day then we will probably lose this house (and about £3K of various fees and expenses).

    Jemma - thanks for the information. It does sound like Abbey are very slow. Do you know when the valuation was done for your mortgage and how long you've been waiting since then for the official offer letter?

    The problem is that this is our buyers mortgage and so I can't chase it. I have to chase the estate agent to chase our buyer to chase Abbey.

    We had our offer letter on 20th October and have been waiting since then for our buyer to get their act together. GGRRRRRR :mad:

    For future reference:
    Nationwide = very fast
    Abbey = very slow.

    Well after 4 weeks the vendor threatened to pull out as they had not heard anything in terms of a survey. So we had to start chasing Abbey who had said at the start that they do the application first then send a surveyor round. But when we chased them they said they could have done at any stage all along. The survey was eventually done around the 20th November - and still no offer letter yet - though should be arriving today or Monday apparently.

    I have just obtained mortgage from abbey. I have defaults due to not going back to work after maternity leave cos of ill child. I put in offer on 10th nov applied for mortgage on 15th Nov and they have released the funds today. Just nervously waiting for the monies to go through to other sols and waiting to pick up keys today. If I get the phone call to say completed it means I have exchanged and completed within 5.5 hours. It did take going to sols this morning and not leaving until I was sure they were going to attempt completion today. I knew that if I walked out of their office without an almost guarantee they wouldn`t be taking any of my phone calls. They have been a nightmare but they did pull out all the stops to get it all done on their side today.

    Hello all

    I can see people joining the race but WE ARE OUT :mad:

    Well we are not completing today… or any time soon! (I haven’t updated my sig yet)

    We were waiting on pending enquiries which were supposed to be in last Mon. Our sols rang me today saying that finally after being chasing them all week, the vendor’s sols have admitted they haven’t been able to reply them since the owner has lost all the paperwork he got when he bought the house! Grrr…. :mad: Can you believe it? I thought maybe it was an excuse but our sol said it sounded genuine as they have the same problem with the other flat the vendor is selling (same house 1st floor flat).

    So apparently they have only kept a copy of the lease which they managed to dig out; but all the other papers related to planning permission on the work carried out before, plans of that, etc. they cannot find.

    So…..they are contacting the sols who did the purchase 3 years ago for them to dig out these papers from their vault. In turn, this solicitor is off from work ‘til next Tuesday and then it will take 2 weeks to provide the documentation. PLUS all solicitors offices (our, theirs and previous) do not open from the 22.12 to the 02.01.07 so we are looking at receiving the enquiries back in the 1st weeks of January.

    Just then our sols will draw the contracts and prepare all our paperwork for exchange; and it looks like we will only be completing at the end of January!

    We are really mad at the vendor not admitting this before instead of just making us wait for the enquiries! But on the other hand it might work better for us as it might be done just when we are back from our winter holidays…gotta see the positive side…:rolleyes:

    Good luck to all the rest of you!

    Hi Jemma, have you phoned abbey lately. They did my survey 2 weeks ago and I never heard anything, I phoned last fri and managed to get them to fax the solicitor with the offer. They messed up sending the fax so sol only received the offer yesterday. Abbey also told me they can fax funds through as an emergency so it`s been just over 24 hours since getting the offer and them sending funds to complete the sale. just off to get the keys as now all completed. Yeah, sigh of relief.
