I would hazard a guess that insurance company can stop paying out on claims now for drivers who fail to prepare for winter with the correct tyres etc..

Swapping around is common place in Europe.. but not here?

Bald Summer tyres in winter your asking for a crash with the local hedge.

It's the law in Europe, at least all the countries I have driven in.
That is why insurances can refuse to pay out.

Until it is the law here, they cannot (unless you sign contract with clause about winter tyres in...)

Not what goodyear say, go to

click the "compound" link on the right and you get....."The Eagle F1 GS-D3 tyre offers you supreme power transfer with demanding traction and braking in summer conditions."

which I think is diplomatic speak for "get some winter tyres or you will have an accident"

I bet that they are not marked as " Summer Tyres ". ;)
  • There will always be people in all walks of life who don't like change and they are usually the ones moaning for several years about this and that new fandangled technology, and then once they realise that actually yes it may just be better, tehy will be the ones shouting from teh rooftops about thsi amazing new didgerydoo "they" have found....! We all know who they are and meet people like them everyday

Bottom line is winter tyres have been in European and North American countries for years and a lot of thiose countries do indeed have more severe wintry snow conditions than we do. However how anyone can live in country that is again getting -10 and -15 temperature in november claim that we don't really need them is beyond me. Maybe can;t afford them is another matter - not need them is IMO just wrong

Many performance cars these days have very low profile tyres and large wheel sizes, that combined with a powerful engines and generally untrained drivers really is not a good combination in the winter. Changing tyres to reduce the likelihood of sliding off the road at the first glimpse of snow can only be a good thing and improving the breaking distances beyond recognition can certainly only be a (especially for pedestrians) good thing

I hope that insurance companies adopt a similar stance to Germany where they aren't compulsory as siome seem to think, but if you have an accident and are found to be on unsuitable tyres you will incur a larger portion of the blame. Imagine that having to take rsponsibility for your own actions -how very new world!

    Drive safe everyone

Thank you - to the dogoerrs who say utter rubbish - give over..

Germany has now passed a new law staying that Winter tyres must be fitted on all 4 wheels of the car/van if under 3.5 tons. HGV's on the drive axels.

Think about it, using unsuitable tyres for the condition of the road and weather. Your asking for trouble, and quite rightly insurance companies should Void your insurance as your driving a unsafe car, a bloody great risk to other road users - common sense.. why drive around on slicks or sports tyres in snow and ice... your going to skid in to the first thing that will take you off the road.

I counted over the last few days, 3 mercs, 2 BMWs, 2 chav'ed up corsa's and a volvo C30 i think - all decided to have rearrangements with the hedges, trees and ditches.

Oh I forgot one HGV Fridge lorry too in a farmers field this morning bear in mind I drive these things and they are bloody horrible things to work with during the snowy periods so you and anybody else can get the things for your day to day lives in the local shops.

    Drive safe everyone

That is the best advice you have given, the driver is to blame for most vehicles leaving the road.

Perhaps all drivers should be made to take on Off Road course to be able to drive on snow, or have their insurance invalidated.;)

Maybe, but I would suggest if you think offroad, and snow and ice over tarmac are the same, you should do the course first, then come back and re-post in the spring.

I have driven off road on snow and on road on snow.

    Chalk and cheese.
  • Just noticed this thread and thought i'd share our experience.
We have an XC90 which obviously is great in all weathers but this is our 1st winter with it and we've just put on 4x Vredestein Wintrac 4 Extreme and got to test them out today in the snow. They're fantastic tyres - grip, road noise etc and they will stay on the car all year round. We took advice from the Volvo forums and these were highly recommended and in some cases have lasted 4 years or more.
We paid approx £110 each I think, had them delivered and then got a local tyre garage to fit and balance them.
I would recommended them but they're probably not much use on anything thats not a 4x4!

No, you get them in smaller car sizes too.
