  • No, you get them in smaller car sizes too.

Oh well, I would recommend them for all sizes of car then!

Maybe, but I would suggest if you think offroad, and snow and ice over tarmac are the same, you should do the course first, then come back and re-post in the spring.

..and if you think that Winter Tyres are the ultimate panacea to driving safely on snow/ice, you are sadly mistaken.

I agree they are not identical, but they will give a driver a far better understanding of vehicle control in slippery conditions.

Do off road schools use summer tyres?
If they do, fair emough, if not, let's stick to tyres that are right for the occasion.

Not really sure what a " Summer Tyre " is, I have never seen a tyre marked as such.

    ;)

They will tend to use something like Pirelli Scorpion A/T (All Terrain) which aren't winter tyres as such.

There's a good explanation on this link.

Whilst I am sure you are being deliberately obtuse rather than stupid ;) just do a search on any of the main online tyre retailers and you can select summer, winter or all season

As you have clearly not experienced the different level of grip available on winter tyres and regular all round or summer tyres (call them what you what want if it keeps you happy) on the same car you are providing information based on nothing but speculation and maybe different experiences. Maybe leave the thread for those who have fitted winter tyres this year after driving on summer ones last year? Personally I think THAT is the best advice I have given....

Anyone who thinks tyres are going to sort out the idiot behind the wheel neesd their head testing , but having something that you can buy that undoubedly makes a car safer in many colder driving conditions (especially stopping and steering) can't be anything but a good thing I would have thought.
But as I said there are others especially on here, that always "know" better :D

Tyre might not have them marked on the side but manufacturers do refer to their tyres as summer, all-season and winter tyres- certainly the goodyear and pirelli sites do.

Totally agree. The difference a set of tyres can make either all-season or winter will make is marked. Will never sort out bad driving, but when someone pulls out on you the difference in stopping and steering could make all the difference.

I have had a landy in the past and now have a focus. The front wheel drive car with winter tyres is miles better than a 4x4 with summer tyres. Yes in the latter you can pull off easily but you will still have the same problems with breaking that a 2wd car has. The ultimate would be a 4x4 with winter tyres I reckon.

Well, to report back, the Nokians are certainly different to the Michelin energies that were new probably August before last winter.
We had several inches of snow last night again, on top of the ice on the road below. No gritters are out here. Road is on a slope, with our drive on a bigger slope. The milkman gave up and walked from the main road today.
Last year I would have struggled to say the least, and would have to cleared the bottom of the drive to get up off the pavement and onto the drive coming home.
This year, no problems at all. I had to go out to a customer, through the snow, back again and back on the drive without breaking a sweat.
Best of all, without even having to shovel the drive.
