HTC Desire Rebooting Issue

Yes the whole issue is shocking. That a company can sell a phone that simply doesn't work and get away with it really bad. Whe I get a few more people posting on here we will raise it with trading standards and see if BBC watchdog will take it up.
This business of the retailers washing their hands of the problem is I believe illegal as well and needs sorting out.0 -

hi all,
ive had my htc desire since the 18/7/10 and first of all it started to overheat badly within about a week (when using the net at first). i know the roads around this country of ours pretty well, so never bothered with the satnav, despite buying the phone BECAUSE it had it built in.
so when i finally had reason to use it, everything was fine.......for the first hour! it was still getting very hot - and btw, when i say hot, i mean it was almost too hot to hold for any length of time. so as you will know doubt guess, it rebooted!!! my darling wife suggested i should maybe take it off charge the next time i used it (i bought 2 on the same day, so used wifeys when mine went down). i did that on the way back from our hols, but sadly it didnt make a damn bit of difference!
i called orange who said it was definitely the battery as they had heard of similar problems of overheating and rebooting as a result. i asked if they would change the phone as i thought it might not be a simple battery issue and they said they would, and that they would just send me one out and i should send my 'old' one back in the return envelope. i said id give the battery a try first (yes, im a trusting sole). BUT, should the problem still persist, that i would be calling again wanting a new phone.....
heres the thing though, and youll love this. i was out feeding the ducks with my son and darling wifey the other week, when i saw a duck id never seen before. out comes the phone, camera pointed at said duck and i get a few pics. GREAT, i thought, ill just get this last one as he (too nicely coloured to be a she) was looking right at me. now the thing is, 2 year old boys feeding ducks dont take a whole lot of notice of anything just above their head (im sensing you know where this is going). so, phone in hand......erm......no it isnt! WIFEY!!!!! now, having fished my poor (WET) htc out of the river crane, and letting it dry off for a good while, it still works. AND, the damn thing doesnt overheat any more either......of course, it still reboots every time i use satnav, and i AM sending it back to orange when i can be arsed to call them, but i thought you might like to hear/read how i managed to cool my phone down:D0 -
I think these phones come with some sort of sticker that changes colour when its submerged in water, i really hope that orange don't use this as an excuse to not send you out a replacement. If they do maybe just say something about using the phone when it was slightly raining or something to that effect. Good luck

yes they do and yes it has. but, as they said they would send out the phone first, then i should be in the clear. and besides, i know for a fact that they only check one phone in every 500 they get back (i used to work for both vodafone AND orange) and they both do the same. and as you have obv read, rebooting phones [htc] seems to be quite common, so im hoping they just accept mine without checking:D0 -
And here's another part of the same scam. Just got my T Mobile bill in and I've been charged £6.51 for phoning mobilephonesdirect about the problem. Seems a lot for a 20 min call to an 0845 number.
So when you have a problem it costs you to try and sort it out.:(0 -
I would consider raising it with Watchdog now, rather than waiting. You may well find that people will be more inclined to come forward if there's something out there that could be a platform to speak their minds.0

Just to add my piece to this...
Both myself and my housemate have Desires, both purchased several weeks apart, on different networks - his is the black one, mine in the brown one. Both have exhibited the exact same fault - both only after around 3 months of use, and both seemingly triggered by using the Navigation app (I don't think it's the app itself that's at fault, but more that it probably hammers the processor and the data connection which triggers the progressive overheat problem). My housemate's got so bad that eventually it completely corrupted itself when rebooting so that it wouldn't boot up at all anymore - unable to even factory reset it. Fortunately he's with Orange and a VIP (high spend) customer so Orange couriered him a replacement the next day, but I'm not expecting such good service from T-mobile.
But yeah - seems an awfully big coincidence for us both to see the fault on entirely different phones supplied at different times from different networks if this is an "isolated" problem... Poor show HTC. I loved my Desire but you've definitely lost yet another future customer come upgrade time.0 -
Just to add my 2p.
I got my phone the week of release on o2, from an o2 store. All has been fine until some time after the update to 2.2. I get reboots when the phone gets hot, usually above 37C which to be honest isn't THAT hot!
Sometimes it will reboot and get stuck in a loop.
Recently, I don't think i've gone a day without it rebooting

I have the same rebooting problem with HTC desire. As others have found it was fine for about 3 months (bought in June) and then starting random reboots. Although the phone at first felt a little warm it didnt seem warmer than it had felt before reboots happened. Frequency of reboots have increased. First used to do it whilst web browsing after around 5-10 mins. Then it occurred using google maps. However it never seemed to do it (and never has) when using WIFI. After it has rebooted there is a very high probablity of going into a reboot again. SOmetime the phone just freezes mid reboot and you have to remove the battery to get it to start again. Recently it has occurred whilst playing games on the phone. I am really disapointed as the phone in all other respects is very good. I bought the phone from carphone warehouse and they suggested I get in touch with HTC directly for repair under warranty. I havent yet contacted them as i am unsure as to whether this problem can really be cured with any repair. I think watchdog would be a good course of action.0
