HTC Desire Rebooting Issue

Hi,

I want to find out if anyone else is having an issue with the HTC Desire.

My phone is about 4 months old and for the first 3 months worked fine. But then I put it on GPS navigation and the phone rebooted. Over the past few weeks it has steadiliy got worse and now it reboots at random. If it's on charge it reboots, sometimes when I'm on a call it does it, ask it to do almost anything and it reboots.

Soemtimes when it reboots it goes into a loop where I get the white startup screen and maybe it gets to the HTC logo and then it reboots again. And it keeps doing that until I have to take the battery out and leave it for a while.

Last night I had just typed out a long text message and before I could send it the thing went off. Most annoying.

I have read on some other forums about similar issues and somebody mentioned over heating. So last night when it went into it's reboot loop I took the battery cover off and held the battery against a large piece of cold metal to cool it down and lo and behold it started up no problem.

Today I phoned my phone supplier Mobil Phones Direct who were particularly unhelpful and unsympathetic. Even though I bought the phone from them they said their responsibility for the phone ended after 14 days from purchase. All they could suggest was to phone HTC and send it back under warranty.

From what I've read on other forums people have sent their Desire back to be repaired waited a long time and when they get it back it's still not working. The other thing is all the while you are without a phone and are still expected to pay for the service in my case it's £25 a month with T Mobile. I can't even use one of my old phones as they are not on TMobile.

Not our problem says my supplier so I phoned HTC. The guy there said he knew about the reboot issue but it wasn't widespread and I probably just had a faulty phone which they would repair. I asked for a courtesy phone in the meantime, but they don't offer that. I asked about all the other people complaining about the same issue and he said these were all liars and there was no fundamental issue with the phone.

I don't believe him and I'd like anyone else with the same problem to join with me and contact BBC Watchdog about it because in my view the phone has a basic flaw, it should be recalled, and owners given another phone.

Please let me know if I'm alone with this or is it a big issue.

    Hi there

I got my first HTC desire on 1st sept it lasted about 4 weeks. after several calls vodaphone replace with what they told me was a brand new handset - turned out to be reconditioned.

2nd one lasted 3 days and again replaced.

The 3rd broke a week ago. This time vodaphone said only option was repair. mmmm not happy with that. When I asked why was told no HTC's in stock. After 3 hours of argusing that it was not my fault they had none in stock and that I had hardly been able to use the phone since I started the contract in sept they finally gave in to my request of a different phone. Basically was told to go to Vodaphone shop and pick any phone (apart from Iphone) and they would arrange a stock to store trf. So of I went and 30 mins later left with a shiny new Samsung Galaxy - guy in the shop did try to sell me the Dersire HD but i said i had no confidence in HTC.

Now apparently vodaphone will contact me to arrange to collect the faulty handset - which has started working again. DOnt know when they will contact me but if I still have it in a couple of months its going on ebay.

I am so much happier with the Samsung and its much easier to use and better features.

    Hi Scots,

I had exactly the same issue with my HTC Desire. The problem started after about 5 or 6 weeks and, as I had bought it through mobiles.co.uk, they advised me to take it to a Carphone Warehouse shop and they would send it to HTC. It took about 28 days for the repair and Carphone Warehouse offered me a handset on loan.

When I got the phone back, it had been reloaded with Android 2.2 software. It works fine now and I am very pleased with it.

When I encountered the problem I did a bit of research on the net and it certainly would appear that quite a few other HTC Desire owners have encountered similar difficulties with their phones.

Good luck with getting yours repaired!
  • My HTC Desire was collected for repair yesterday.

S/N starts with HT06. Problem sounds identical to Scots' — reboots (or screen freezes) very soon after starting Google navigation. Factory reset did not fix the problem.

I got the phone in July, it was fine for three months, then it began suffering random reboots. These could occur when on standby, or when under load, there was no pattern.

The reboots have become more frequent. It will consistently reboot within 2 minutes when using GPS.

Sorry to hear others are having problems. It shows I'm not alone and suggests there is a fundamental flaw with this device.

In my view what should happen is HTC should admit there is a problem and either recall all the phones or if somebody reports the problem they should immediately send out another phone and swap over so the user is not without a phone.

Surely if HTC are selling phones with a built in fault that must be illegal. I'm not saying they did it on purpose but it is their responsibility.

I've read stories of others waiting 6 weeks to get their phone back from HTC and all the while being without a phone and still having to pay their monthly service charge. It's quite unacceptable.

Would others with the same issue please let us know here so we can build a case for recompense.
  • Probably a bad batch with a fault?

Is the phone on Android 2.1 or 2.2
There are a few issues being reported as the possible problem.

    1) Overheating (Phone should be fine till it hits the 50c mark then it can cause a reboot.)
    2) Bug in the 2.1 OS (People have reported that upgrading to Froyo 2.2 solved the problem.)
    3) Hardware fault (People have sent in their phones and had the Motherboard replaced)

Couple of things you can do:
    1) Keep an eye on the temp of the phone (check diagnostic apps in the market)
    2) If you can't upgrade to 2.2 on your network, you may have to look into "rooting" the phone and installing a generic 2.2 rom for the Desire.
    3) complain and get HTC to replace the phone

  • my rebooting issue has gotten progressively worse in the past few days.

I was watching MOTD tonight and it rebooted three times in the space of about half an hour.

just really exploring my options - got the phone from phones4u about 6 months ago on a 24 month contract.

Jason it seems to be a widespread problem with this phone.

Also for me it has highlighted the issue of who is responsible when buying a phone, theres the shop/online seller, theres the manufacturer HTC, then theres the service provider in my case T Mobile.

I would have thought the shop is the one to sort things out but that doesnt seem to be happening.

I'd like to get somebody to tell me who is responsible.

I'm off for a week's holiday tomorrow, if airport is open with the snow, but when I get back I'm going to contact BBC Watchdog about it.

Can anyone else with the reboot problem post here so I can point to the thread as evidence of the problem. Thx
  • I'm having the same problem and HTC are supposed to arrange a courier to collect the phone today so that it can be repaired - from what I understand, I have a faulty motherboard. My phone is prone to switching itself off while vibrating 7 times. You then have to remove the battery to get it to restart.

I purchased mine SIM free through Play.com so I went direct to HTC regarding the problem.
