Hospital wouldn't reveal sex of baby at 20 week scan

  • My hospital will tell you if they come across it, but they won't spend time looking for it as time is precious in an over-stretched department.

The 20 week scan is an anomaly scan, so if I were you I use your energy remembering how lucky you are that no problems were found rather than wasting energy being annoyed that you couldn't find out the sex.

  • Congrats first of all! :)

Well i know quite a few people who have been told they are having a boy (the most common mistake) and one friend told she was having a girl - all went out buying heaps of gender specific items and then they give birth to a girl (or in my good friends case, she had a baby boy and his first night was spent in a pretty pink sleepsuit :p)

Why not hold back £10 a week for the next 7 weeks and then book - as your girlfriend will be 27wks this is an ideal time to find out the sex and will be more accurate (although it's never 100%).

In all honesty though please don't make the mistake of buying all items in one colour...it means you're less likely to pass on/sell as easily or what if you chose to have another child, you may have all of the wrong colours - obviously clothes would be gender specific but some people go crazy for the pink or blue equipment and that in my opinion is asking for trouble ;)

I speak as someone who's been there lol, 25 and two children (one girl, one boy), had my daughter when we were just 21. :D

Good luck with everything though! :T

    3. There's absolutely no point dressing them 'nice' for the first few days/weeks as they'll just pee/poo/puke in and on anything they're wearing anyway :D

Some babies do grow out of clothes quickly, too. So some stuff might be worn once and that's it.

I agree its nice to know if you can, but its not that important, I had the scan and huge problems found, and basically the condtion was incompatiable with life, now I couldnt care a less as long as the baby was healthy, thank your stars the baby was healthy, that was really what the scan was for. If you really really want to know, then find the money its not that much, and I realise you are on low incomes, but sell a couple of things on ebay and £70 voila. Although I have to say I find it verrrrry frustrating that hospitals all have different policys, I find that unfair, ok if no hospital id nuchal scans, or 12 week scans, or gender but it varies so much, and is a postcode lottery and that is a little unfair.

I work in midwifery and I see lots of baby boys wrapped in their older sister's pink shawl and vice versa! No-one can tell you with any certainty what sex your baby is just from a scan anyway. My hospital does tell parents the sex but they always say that it is not guaranteed as scans can be deceptive at the best of times. Just buy lots of babygros in white or with little prints on, all babies are cute no matter what they are wearing.

(I recently saw a woman from (I think) Armenia, whose baby was dressed all in blue, with a blue crib and everything. I spent ten minutes telling both parents what a handsome son they had until I read the notes and discovered that it was a girl!!! :rotfl:)

  • I hate the term sonogram ......to me it is and always will be ultrasound / radiographer / radiology department but I digress.

What you pay your taxes for is the medical care your fiancee is receiving ....that medical care does not include telling you the sex of the baby so that it will make life / decorating easier.

Buy / decorate in neutral colours.

As has already been said, there are some cultures where they will abort the baby if it is the 'wrong' sex.

  • I was only 22 when I had my first child, and we didn't want to know her gender. I don't know if it was even possible back then (she's 19 now).

When my son was born twelve years ago, I had additional scans because birth defeccts had been detected - the sonographer and consultants kept referring to the baby as 'he', so I was pretty certain I was having a boy. Sure enough, my little lad came along (five weeks early and very ill - he was given four hours to live and had surgery the day he was born).

So I agree with the poster who said to be glad that your child doesn't have any apparant problems at this stage and just enjoy the pregnancy. You'll meet up with your little one soon enough :j
  • Hi there

I really wanted to know mainly because I am impatient and can't wait to know things. The hospital wouldn't tell us either, all they said was maybe a boy, at 20 week scan they said they would be shocked if a girl, and lo and behold my beautiful baby boy was born two months ago.

I didn't buy any blue things at all, for first month in white or yellow items, and of course he has seen received lots of blue things from other people.

    Even nappies are unisex.
  • Personally I found out the sex with all three of my babies

All three times they were correct DD 1st one (who we later lost) DS1 and DS2 both now healthy 7 and 3 yr olds.

I can appreciate the posts of be happy with what you get and be thankful all is well and with DD anyway I wasn't fussed about finding out in fact they couldn't tell me she had her legs crossed :) she was sexed at a later scan (when being scanned for queries about her growth)

DS1 I was desperate to know as I was stressed he would be a girl and the same thing would happen they told me straight away with him and it allowed me to relieve some of the tension I had felt up until that point in the pregnancy, DS2 I also found out was a boy before birth for the same reasons as above.

I will also ask to know in any future pregnancy provided we are blessed enough to become pregnant, I don't see it as my right but I felt it was important to know so I could prepare myself and if in the future that means paying to know then I would pay it to have peace of mind and be able to adapt for me is important. I recognise however that it is not always that case for others though :) just my opinion though

OP good luck with the remainder of the pregnancy buy all neutral clothing there is something very sweet about white and lemon babygrows and I bought these regardless of what I was told for the early days in hospital and at home.

    xx

I think you have mistaken the reason for the scan. It's not a scan to determine the sex of the baby.

It's an anomaly scan which is performed to check the baby is growing properly and there are no problems with either the baby or placenta.

You don't have any rights to be told the sex, regardless of how much tax you have paid.
Here I go again on my own....
