Warning !!!! anyone who has purchased a new ford
diesel (any make) DO NOT put sainsburys city diesel in the tank because it has the same affect as if you had put petrol in ,,,,,sister in law has a s-max 60 plate (diesel) and topped up with city diesel and made it home but later it would not start so called out the rac and he was baffled until he phoned around and got the heads up about the problem So if this has happened to you and you have been charged by ford get your money back because theyre not informing you that you have to steer clear of sainsburys

    Perhaps it was petrol.
  • If there were a particular problem with Sainsbury's Diesel and Ford engines you'd know about it by now as it would be on the national news!

I've only ever used ASDA fuel oil in my 2004 1.4 TDCi Fiesta (with the Peugeot HD engine), simply due to cost and convenience (I shop there anyway, because of cost), and it runs fine.

I thought diesels were capable of running on almost anything.

Whilst my Mondeo TDCi is happier on shell etc, it'll run just fine on Asda/Tesco/Morrisons with just a slight 1MPG or so drop in economy.

pstuart - you're getting just over half the MPG I get. Either something is wrong or you can't drive it properly.

Thanks for the interest, the car is a 163ps powershift estate - how do I drive it properly?

My Corsa only likes Asda fuel, not Morrisons.

This is because Morrisons car park/petrol station is badly laid out and is far too stressful for its owner. You never know whether people are going to obey the road markings or follow common sense.

I was getting 35mpg from my old 1997 1.8 petrol Mondeo.

To date my new little diesel Fiesta averages just under 54mpg. My pattern of usage is basically 100 miles of urban driving to & from work every week plus 150 miles of motorway cruising every other weekend.

I don't drive it as "enthusuastically" as I did when I first got it.

Diesel engines deliver their maximum torque at much lower revs than petrol engines. Mine is 160Nm at 2000rpm.

It does take a bit of time to adjust to this.

If all you're doing is pottering around town in busy traffic then no wonder your economy is low, and probably not the best use of a diesel.

    Thankyou all for your comments.

Now perhaps back to the thread.
  • Don't Sainsbury's use the same fuel supplier as Tesco?

Personally these 'warnings' need to be treated with caution for MSE. There may be an issue but an post which at the moment is fairly unsubstantiated stating that you should stay away from Sainsbury's won't make them too happy.
