Don't Sainsbury's use the same fuel supplier as Tesco?

Personally these 'warnings' need to be treated with caution for MSE. There may be an issue but an post which at the moment is fairly unsubstantiated stating that you should stay away from Sainsbury's won't make them too happy.

Depends on the geographical proximity of Sainsburys and Tesco stores.

For example, Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Shell, BP, Texaco, Murco etc etc in the Southampton/Portsmouth area are likely to be supplied under a reciprocal agreement from Esso Fawley Refinery.

I have put several different supermarket diesel in my 2005 130Tdci Mondeo.

Every time I did it, normally due to simple convenience, my car has run worse.

The first couple of times I though it was my imagination, but after my wife borrowed my car without telling me, used up almost all the fuel then filled back up to almost the same level with Tesco diesel confirmed it, as I thought there was something wrong with it, she then mentioned that she had used it and filled up at Tesco.

To be honest I never paid much attention to diesel quality before, just price and availablity, but I did an experiment at work, the Zafira Cdti that I used to use wasn't used much by anybody else, so for a couple of weeks I used only BP "super" diesel, can't remember what its called off hand.

I noticed better fuel consumption, well OK, 2 mpg more, 17 to 19mpg. (I am talking about the Zafira as mentioned in my last sentence)

Better performance and pickup when accelerating, and more importantly the engine never went into limp home for the entire time, due to the DPF clogging up.

That car was nicknamed the boomerang by the fitters it was going into limp mode so often.

When it started to get used by others that put in normal BP it started the limp mode habit a few weeks later. (yes, still referring to the Zafira)

As mentioned above, my comments on Tesco fuel are only relevant in East London and Essex. (Now getting back to my Mondeo, after digressing)

But I personally won't put supermarket diesel in my Mondeo, unless I was running out and had to do a splash and dash to get me home.

I will add that I was as sceptical about different fuel qualities as the next man, but my experiences over the last 2 years or so have changed my opinion.

It may just be different additives, but since Tesco and Esso are the same price near me, I would be daft to put in Tesco diesel.

I don't notice any difference between Esso or BP though, and I am too tight to put the BP "super" diesel in my own car.

I have added some red wording to my post via edit, to ensure that those that read something without actually understanding it properly now won't feel the need to post that my Mondeo does 17-19 mpg.

If you don't understand a post, or it doesn't make sense the first time, then re read it, as it will make it more likely for you to understand it after this second reading, a bit like at school or uni.

Do Tesco and Sainsbury's not use Greenergy for fuel supply which they get for their various depots around the UK.

Yes amongst other locations. The funny thing is that Sainsburys are buying their fuel from Greenergy... who are owned by Tescos (and Barclays Bank). :D

  • Bigjl, you mean you only get 17-19mpg in your diesel Mondeo?I'd expect 2-3 times that, or have I misunderstood?

I can guarantee you that in Scotland Tesco and Sainsburys fuel comes from INEOS in Grangemouth as does BP, Esso, Shell, etc etc etc.

As for supermarket fuel being worse than anything else? Absolute rot and I wish people would stop trying to keep this rumour alive. I put anything available in my tank (I'd !!!! in it if I thought it'd run on it) and notice no difference whatsoever.

Thanks for the interest, the car is a 163ps powershift estate - how do I drive it properly?

Live in Bolton Lancs only ever been in 6th twice due to traffic.

Drive it like a diesel and not like a petrol. There's quite a difference.

Don't take the revs right up before changing gear as you'd do in a petrol car. Whereas most torque in a petrol car is produced high in the rev range, its low down in a diesel. When the wife drives my car she drives it like her Mitsubishi FTO going right up the revs before changing gear and its the only time it goes below 50MPG :D

During normal driving, there's no need to go above 2500RPM. Use the low end torque for accelerating and for cruising keep it in a gear that keeps it around 2000RPM.

SAY WHAT? I've driven 17 tonne wagons with that kind of fuel economy. If your Mondeo isn't getting 50MPG there's summat wrong with it and/or your driving. If its not achieving low 40's then there's definitely summat wrong with it.

When the turbo pipe split on mine this week, economy tanked by 20% from mid 50's to mid 40's.

    Couldn't agree more.

I use all sorts of Diesel in my motor and haven't noticed anything with different company fuels.

They are all produced to the same standard. Infact it's probably all the same fuel labelled differently

It's like V power. My car i used to have specified to run only only super unleaded. I did this for a while and when the price rose i dropped to standard unleaded. didn't notice a single difference in the car.

Maybe it's nothing more than a mind trick

Fords don't like Sainsburys diesel. What a load of boll*cks
