  • Jesus, what a dumba$$!!
  • The first company I worked for had a fixed holiday period. They shut the factory down same time every year . After that every other company counted your entitlement on a monthly basis so a new employee would only be able to take 2.2 days for every month in the company. So after 10 months there was no problem booking 22 days. All the companies I worked for were very happy to have enough prior notice to get a "contractor" in to cover your work.

That wouldn't work for me. I have a contract of employment which says that I can only take a maximum of 10 consecutive days off at any time, therefore I couldn't take a month off unless it was exceptional circumstances.

We also have set times of year when holidays aren't permitted because of the needs of the business. I suspect that may be the same for a lot of people.

As for getting a contractor in to cover my work - my employer wouldn't pay me for having a month off and then pay someone else a contract rate to come in and cover me.

    Daft.

take first 2 weeks in june and the last 2 weeks in november
the next year take first 2 weeks in may and last 2 weeks in october

so your number of months working between holidays is kept to exactly 5

sounds complicated but its not really

This made me laugh so much I had to reply.

Say two people start in January 2011.

I earn 2.5 days a month annual leave.

    Month JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND
    Person A 000000000001 000000000001 000000000001
    Perosn B 000000000001 000000000010 000000000100

Person A takes annual leave in December
Person B takes annual leave a month earlier each month

    This means over 3 years

Person A has taken all his annual leave by the end of December
Person B has also used all his annual leave but has 2 months at the end where he does not accur anymore annual leave until the next year.

And if we carry on this pattern...

    Year 1 Year 2 Year 3
    Month/Year JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND
    Person A 000000000001 000000000001 000000000001
    Perosn B 000000000001 000000000010 000000000100

    Year 4 Year 5 Year 6
    Month/Year JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND
    Person A 000000000001 000000000001 000000000001
    Perosn B 000000001000 000000010000 00000100000

    Year 7 Year 8 Year 9
    Month/Year JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND
    Person A 000000000001 000000000001 000000000001
    Perosn B 000001000000 0000010000000 000010000000

    Year 10 Year 11 Year 12
    Month/Year JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND JFMAMJJASOND
    Person A 000000000001 000000000001 000000000001
    Perosn B 001000000000 010000000000 100000000000

Both people have taken the same leave over 12 years - 12 months.

If both people leave at the end of the 12th month in year 10 Person A can take a month of annual leave before going but Person B i.e you would have to work till the end of year.

What you are suggesting does not work!

the result is working 10 months between holidays and not 11 months like every one else

Then why not just work 9 months between holidays? Or 8 months? Or less?

You should change the title of the thread as it's misleading.

You're wasting your time, he has never worked so doesn't know what it means to a working person when they reach the point of having used up all their holidays. Especially when they reach that point in the first month!

He is also under the impression that everyone works from Jan to Nov then takes all of Dec off. Hasn't noticed that the whole country doesn't shut down in Dec because everyone is on holiday.

As he doesn't work, he doesn't know that most people don't take their whole years holiday in one go, but it sounded plausible to him when he read it.
