Thanks Nic. I don't have much in the way of white stuff so it's a bit of a pain and will just have to put them in with my coloureds, or waste a wash on just 3 nappies. Mind you what am I saying?! I'm going to have loads of white soon. Doh. Muslins, baby grows, baby bedding!

I have one nappy (the 'free' bumgenius) that can be used from newborn. May as well use it - it says it's low cut too so sits under the umbilical cord. The others are birth to potty and although they say they are suitable from 8lb, I get the impression they fit better a bit later than that.

Oh and I have no idea how minging newborn poo can be! Am I in for a shock?!

Nic- Crikey I can see how yours is a bit of a quandry. I have no idea on the legal side of how it is all drawn up - something I will have to investigate at some point soon too. I suppose I'm quite fortunate in that my options are prob limited - both sets of parents are in their 60s and kids have long flown the nest. My brother is a singleton living abroad with no ties, and DH has one sister who still lives at home and is showing no signs of settling down! So that pretty much leaves us with my sis who has just had her first child, so there will only be a couple of months between my girl and her boy. Her and her OH have been together 15 years and have very good jobs and lifestyle. So to me, that would be the ideal choice - but then I guess she has to agree lol. I think I will bring it up with her next week and see what she thinks.

It's complicated being a grown up! And there's me thinking choosing a pram is hard :rotfl:

Thats a point, Ive never actually asked anyone apart form OH what they thought. Maybe they wouldnt want to be lumbered with my brood.

None of the kids are Chirstened so weve never had to choose godparents or anything like that.
I would definently chose family over friends just so the rest of the family could visit etc. Our best friends are perfect to take the kids as they have fab jobs, great people and are trying so hard for a family. But they live in Prague!. so that wouldnt be fair on family.

Im off to look into life insurance on another board, i feel quite grown up and responsible looking at things like wills etc.

R.e the fleece liners, fleece are fantastic for liquid poo's as they draw moisture through and dry the poo out a bit so its easily tipped fown the loo. It will just roll off the fleece.

I didnt get on with paper liners at all.
Thanks lauren. Sounds like it might be all trial and error. There's just so much to learn.

    yep :rotfl:

it goes form black and very sticky (think tar!!) then green and slimy. then to yellow, a bit like a chinese curry type colour. Its all quite runny too.
be prepared to go through more of your wipes than you think.
We had a grade of mingin pooage, it went along the lines of,

    its a 1 wiper- pee
    2-3 wiper - normal poo
5 wiper- minging, yellow, liquid, leaked out the sides, smelly etc

ive never used resuable wipes, i might give them a bash. I use a face cloth for faces and hands.

Its all fun. Just remember even babies in disposables have explosions and leaks so dont get sucked in to believing washable nappies are second rate compared to pampers etc etc despite how many people try to put you off them.

There are a lot of anti cloth people out there.

Re nappies - I'd wash them 3 times - and use fleece liners. As Lauren says, they wick moisture away from the baby, stop the nappies getting stained, and once you are past the liquid breastmilk poos, it is very easy to flick poo down the toilet. I never saw the point of paper liners and still have the roll that came with DS's nappies when he was born - and he's potty trained now.

And wills - we will have to update when we finally buy a house (long saga, ongoing...) but if one of us dies, the house will pass to the other with mortgage paid, and there is life assurance and death in service payment that will see to bills etc for a good while. As OH works and I don't, we also have a chunk of savings in my name only, so it won't get locked up in probate, or if OH is too ill to access his accounts.

If we both die, my brother and his partner will have the children, and there will be a trust set up, with three close but independent friends (my two best friends, and OH's best friend) who will have discretionary control over releasing funds. The house would be in trust for the children, with guardians allowed to live there until both children finish uni or reach 25. The trustees can authorise the sale of the house if it is in the interest of the children (if guardians need to move to a different area, or they need a bigger house etc) as long as our children's interest is protected.

The most difficult thing for us was the decision of who should have the children if we both died - there are several people we would feel happy with, but none have had their own children yet, and a couple are not in long term settled relationships, and I am very aware of the effect that 2 extra children might have on someone's life.

I'm not anti cloth by any means - just trying to weigh up the pros and cons - I used disposables for my two quite a while ago now and don't recall putting too much thought in to poos, wipes and nappies in general (or perhaps I've forgotten :o)

I am tempted towards cloth nappies just for the environmental aspect but at the same time the amount of preparation in advance, and the extra washing is a bit off putting for me - I know it's naughty but can't help it :o

Re what would happen if one of us died (we have life insurance) but on the question of us both dying and legal guardians that's a bit tricky.
My two would go to their dad (my ex husband) but the new baby I'm really not sure - I have 2 sisters but one has 3 kids and the other 4 so I don't think either would be able to accommodate any extra.

Right Im feeling a bit better now - have dug my birth pool out of the cupboard so me and oh can try and put it up at some point soon to check its all still ok....... I imagine ds is going to be thrilled when he sees it lmao.
Found another voucher for £2.50 off a newborn starter kit - where have they all come from ive used 2 already! lmao. So ill pop to asda tonight and pick that up, then I can use the voucher in the sleeve for the next size up considering I am using cloth nappies ive got loads of packs of bloomin disposables lol.

Cant remember who said what but

newborn poo - hmmm yes it isnt pleasant. the tar stuff at the beginning is the best you need some cilit bang or something to shift it :rotfl: (please note this is a joke and it never advisable to put any bleach product on or near your baby ).

I got on fine with cotton wool and warm water last time although what I found better for the runny poos was just to sit ds in washing up bowl (one dedicated for his changing) and wash his whole bum then dry him on a towel otherwise your just there forever.)

Oh and if youve got carpet dont put cotton wool on it!!! It takes years to get the bloomin stuff off you cant hoover it it just sticks lol.

re death: ahhh a lovely subject. I was talking about this the other day ds would have to legally go live with his dad if I die which is motivation enough to never die lol. Have told oh that in case of an early exit by myself he is to fight for ds to stay with him as that would be what is best for ds.

hadnt really thought about what do do if we both die :s.
Got life ins anyway we pay 20.29 a month for a joint policy and it pays out 300k on death.
I gotta say I would never feel 100% happy with my children living anywhere else.....

However the plan is definatley not to die until all the kids are classed as able to make their own desicions for where they will live. ;)
I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.

    OK. Will do.

OK. I'm pretty determined. When I say I'm using cloth nappies I just get "I'll give you a week". The only 2 people that seem to believe in me is mum and OH. I'm sure it's because these other people just think because they didn't use cloth then noone else has got the time to wash cloth.

    Ew, nice!

Well I bought 40 wipes which supposedly is enough to have a cycle of wipes going while some are in the wash. They are terries one side, fleece the other. I never thought of using them for anything other than bum though. The system seems quite easy. Early days just water. Later on you can make up recipes to either spray on, or to make it up in the tupperware box. They don't need drying - just go in the box damp. I've also got hundreds of disposable wipes that I got free/been given in a hamper. So I can use those for when out and about.

  • I'm loving all the washable nappy talk :) I was told you have to wash them twice before use. It takes 6 washes for them to reach full absorbency. I plan on washing the wipes just once in advance. I will use paper liners as I plan on breastfeeding & the poo tends to be a bit more gooey. The liner I can then just flush down the toilet rather than have all that goo over the nappy.

I had my delivery from the Nappy Lady yesterday :) Was rather fun opening it up. I haven't bought nappies from her as we've been given some & I'm just going to buy a few of boots own terry square ones to top up (cheaper). The things I did get were fab though.

I had my first consultant appointment this morning. I will be having growth scans at 26 & 30 weeks & then it will either be every 4 weeks or more often depending on how he grows & how well I am. They were lovely & I'm feeling really well looked after :):):)
