GarnetLady Im so mixed up with clothing , bedding and layers etc. My bubs will be sleeping in the cot from day 1 and we have a sleeping pod/bag from MandPs a millie and borris one. It says we can use from newborn ( my SIL recently had a baby and used hers from new born) Might not use it if other people arent but for the purpose of the question lets say we use it. So I need to put a sheet over mattress ,baby will be in nappy vest and sleepsuit ,then into sleeping bag is that it ? (baby will be born in July ) or do I put a sheet over the sleeping bag?

I wouldn't have thought you'd need both a vest and a sleepsuit, not in July anyway. And a lot of it will depend on how warm the room is... Nothing is ever straightforward is it?? And don't sleeping bags come in 2 different togs? 1.0 for summer and 2.5 for the rest of the year. And you'd only need another sheet if it was cold I'd say. At the end of the day you can have a feel of baby to see if they're too hot or cold. Well that's what I'm telling myself lol.

MW talked about BF at the booking appointment and when I explained that I didn't want to BF she said 'Well if you don't want to breast feed then you'll have to bring your own bottles and formula because we won't provide any. But it's your choice.'

You could tell she was anti bottle feeding but I just smiled and said 'well that's fine, I'll make sure to pack some.'

I think she was hoping that having to bring my own would make me change my mind for some bizarre reason!
I think it's ridiculous that some hospitals won't provide formula - if an adult or child is admitted to hospital they are provided with food so why should a newborn baby be any different? I also can't see how it encourages breastfeeding as surely it encourages people to buy formula and bring it with them just in case which increases the likelihood of them using it.

Sounds similar to my husband - he doesn't like to make a fuss about things and hates the idea of calling into question people who are supposed to be the experts. This is one reason why I intend to have a doula this time.

Yeah, that's it and he wouldn't have the confidence to do it I don't think.

I'm worried that I might get almost... ganged up on, for want of a better phrase. Just because I haven't done this before doesn't mean I don't kow what I want. Well almost... :o Episiotomy, tearing and stitches terrify me. I'd rather be sectioned. (Although I know I have no control over tearing.)

GarnetLady, I'm with you on this.
I have written in big bold letters on my birth plan that I do no want forceps delivery full stop. And since nearly day one I have been repeatedly telling my other half that the only medical intervention I will agree to is a C section. Anything else is without my consent.
I am lucky in that we are both rather assertive and he can also be blunt with it. Hopefully his blunt assertiveness won't be needed but it is reassuring.:p
Although my fear is that he won't be able to attend the birth :( because he can't physically make it back home.

Sounds good, but noway can we afford that :( We have to manage on OH's wage alone, plus no sort of maternity pay for me, so all money going on bills and baby stuff now. Shame! NHS for us I think.

    ...

Does anyone know where we can find out about any benefits we may be entitled to? Apparently we're entitled to child tax credit and benefit, which I think worked out about £100 a month. I am trying to do some self employed work, but in reality it hasn't happened yet. So we're really struggling. No SMP or anything :(
I don't know how long you've been self employed for but if you've been doing it long enough, it should qualify you for Maternity Allowance. If you're paying self employed NI contributions they give you the maximum amount and if you have an low earnings exemption certificate then you get the minimum amount. (One of the many reasons we turned OH's business into a partnership was that it then qualifies me for MA.)

If you're on a low income you should qualify for the Sure Start Maternity Grant which was £500 four years ago. If OH is working you probably don't qualify before the baby is born (I think you have to be on income support or similar) but once you are getting child tax credit, if you are getting more than just the family element then you qualify.

Quite right. If you concentrate on feeding to the exclusion of all else in the first week or so, it will all be good.
That's what I did - I fed and OH did almost everything else.

sequeena and others re layers/clothing/sleeping - Try not to overthink it too much at this stage as its very hard to determine what your lo will be like
for instance ds1 will not sleep with covers on never has doesnt matter what we do within ten mins he is lying on top of all covers and doesnt like them over him therefore we make sure room is fairly warm and when he was little we kept socks on him with his pjs lol. he just got stressed in those grobags. One of my other friends is the same however someone else we know's daughter loves loads of blankets on them (think shes 2=4 now) and therefore they have found they have to put her in shorts and short sleeved top.

You can check on them through the night just feel the back of their neck - if its not hot, sticky, clammy or incredibly cold then their alright.

Its gonna depend on the temp of the room, temp outside, how much they wriggle etc etc as well so its just one of those things you just have to make a judgment call on when their out. :)

*reading back dont mean to sound like i think i know it all or anything just trying to offer advice that I wish id known earlier*

I have a long body pillow for at night which helps a bit. Physio also said use as many pillows as you feel you nedd, at your back, to lean on, between your legs etc.

Is it a straight one or a v shaped one? Straight one would seem to make sense but the ones that mention nursing seem to be v shaped. Aargh I'm sure I'm over thinking this trying to be too thrifty :o

Thank you annibee I have been very worried about this... we live in a rented property, no double glazing and the windows are so old that some of them you can't open because they've rotted. There's a horrible draught in the house at this time of the year even with the heating on. I'm going to make sure baby has a black out blind and heavy curtains in the nursery to keep the draft out... we keep on at our landlord but I don't see anything being done anytime soon and I don't see how we can move.
