  • I understand Dusty, my DH and I can be a bit like that. if we're both calm it's fine, if not then sparks fly.

As for Avent, John Lewis have some reductions and so do Boots, but no idea if the prices are any good.

I'm just checking websites to see if I can get the bundle cheaper if I buy separately as I don't want the bottle warmer either!

Are any of the other bits necessary? Bottle bags, powder pots, milk lids that sort of thing?

ETA - Adsa Direct have some of the baby event stuff already.

Please dont burn me at the stake but im not going to go down the BF route I dont think. I have always had very sensitive nipples and breasts , and that has been my main pain during pregnancy .I honestly could cut them off they hurt that much. The thought of a child sucking on it gives me the same feeling as someone running their nails down a chalk board. I KNOW its really good for my baby etc , so I may give it a try but just feel like if Im forced into doing something Im not happy with it could get me really down and could possibly lead to PND. I have spoken to MW about this and she hasnt really commented.
So I want to be prepared for bottle feeding

I never breastfed with dd and have no intention of doing so with this one either. Like you my boobs and nipples are disgustingly sensitive, oh is not allowed near at the best of times! So the thought of bf actually made me cringe, I did think about it with dd but after the labour when the midwife asked me if I wanted to breast or bottle feed I immediately said bottle, the breast didnt even enter my head. Dont feel guilty about it LL, each to their own, only you know how you feel about this subject. This time Ive not even contemplated it, have my bottles and steriliser at the ready!

Dusty Hopefully this will help a bit, the minimum you should receive would be £125 in mat pay £20 child ben and £10 tax credits (assuming DH is not on a very high wage). So that's £155 a week minimum (no off takes) your mat pay will be higher for the first few weeks/months and your tax credits may be higher (tax and nat ins would apply though).
From the £155 a week the baby can cost as little as £10 a week if your BF, using own brand nappies and not buying much else. Up to £30/£40 a week if your formula feeding buying premium nappies and buying sleepsuits toiletries toys etc regularly.
If the only other thing you have to buy is the groceries you should have enough.

Its the only thing I pay for thats all lol I dont go out, smoke, drink, have excessive shopping habits or anything so the only money I have personally going out every month is for waxing.

Im honestly nt that hairy :o

This made me laugh! I am the opposite - OH gets the benefit of waxing so this is a joint expense :D

((hugs)) Dusty. I know where you're coming from with not wanting to be asking OH for money all the time, I think the suggestion to work out what baby costs will be was a good one, and like the idea of the letter, hopefully OH will take it in better this way.

I have been saving what I can so I can cover things that I want to do while on ML - mother & baby groups, swimming (hopefully), bus fares even down to popping to Starbucks to meet up with people. I could just imagine the rows we'd have if I needed to ask OH for money to do this & justify it to him!!

I have still to work out what money coming in & out will be when I'm on ML. We have a joint account, but each get spending money every month - am not looking forwards to having the discussion about reducing that with OH :eek: which is prob why I've put it off until now.

As far as I'm concerned I will be working just as hard as OH, even though I'm not being paid for it - so I don't see why he should continue in the life he's accustomed to and I should make do!!

Thanks PC, that's reassured me somewhat.

although I still have to pay my loan, car insurance, mobile phone bill so sadly it's not only just groceries i have to pay.

by rough calculations my current costs (loan, phone, car insurance) comes to £90 per week and i think i'll get about £200 in total per week on mat leave but what that is after tax i have no idea. that will then have to cover baby costs and groceries - i have no idea if that will be ebough.
hey ho - i guess once OH doesn't have his tea on the table cos i couldn't afford the groceries, or his child is sat in clothes too small for her cos i couldn't afford new ones, or - heavens forbid - he doesn;t get a birthday present from me cos the money went on nappies - he'll do something about it ;)

So I want to be prepared for bottle feeding

Planning ahead is good, whatever you decide. I BF DS for 7 months & it was great, he went on to bottles at 7 month but we had used them before with expressed breast milk so he was used to them. To me it's the ideal as I'm rather lazy so liked not having to make up bottles especially in the middle of the night, much easier just to get your boob out ;)

I've since had RNY surgery which worked a little too well & as a result I now really struggle to keep my weight up so doubt I'll be able to BF without loosing too much weight. I'm getting everything I need to bottle feed, just the Tommie Tippee microwave steriliser & some bottles in the ASDA baby event, £20 job done :) I will start BF but am expecting to only be able to do it for days, maybe a week or two at most. Do I feel guilty about not planning to BF for longer? Absolutely not. A happy & healthy mummy = a happy baby :)

Would I have liked to BF again for at least 6 months, of course because as I said I found it far easier than bothering with bottles but I know my baby will be fine. We all have different reasons for why we will be BF or bottle feeding & every one is valid. I know many BF for reasons more virtuous than my lazy parent one ;) but whatever works for you is what matters.

Lablover I don't think anyone would shoot you down for not wanting to breastfeed, it's your decision. I have decided I will "have a go" I am not pressuring myself and if I can get on with it then great if not, I will have some formula in the house just in case. The only thing that freaks me out a bit is the thought that I may need to get my boob out anywhere that is away from home - can't imagine breastfeeding in MIL house or anything!

Just looking at some of the baby clothes at Asda has anybody ever used the temp alert clothing? Just wondering - don't really think Ill need the temperature alert bit (stupid place to put it on the back if baby is sleeping!) but if I did need it - does it actually work?
