Giz, I use value washing powder, and have done ever since the free tiny box of non bio that came in my Bounty pack ran out - planning to keep using it with this baby, unless there is a problem.

And re showers - I either used to shower while DS was having a nap in his cot, or I took him into the bathroom and sat him in his bouncy chair. I think I will probably end up using the car seat this time, with a 2 year old as well, just in case he tips her over in the bouncy chair - the carseat is a bit harder to tip up.

Sometimes they cry when you are busy, but sometimes we all have to wait for what we want! Don't forget that crying is the only way babies can communicate - it doesn't necessarily mean that they are particularly distressed. So don't feel guilty if your baby cries a little bit - it is very different to leaving them alone for an hour at a time to scream.

This week, my oven, washing machine and tumble dryer have all given up on me at once - with a load of nappies in the washer. So I have to go and buy some disposables later today to tide us over until it's fixed. So tempted to just give Oli a go at toilet training, but I'm not sure he's quite ready, and it's not the best timing with new house and new baby both on the way.

I had a lovely cuddle with a very sweet baby this morning, and I really want this little parasite out now to be a baby instead of a bump - I am going to be very impatient for the next 10 weeks! I want to start baby shopping too. I've been very restrained so far - I changed our buggy for a Phil and Teds double, as a good one came up on Ebay, and I bought a bug-in-a-rug blanket last night on Ebay, but otherwise I have bought absolutely nothing. I'm still hoping we will move in plenty of time for shopping, but I'm 30 weeks at the weekend, so it's creeping up a little bit, and we still don't have an exchange date on the house.

I have started stocking up on little baby nappies, we always have a couple of boxes of DDs nappies in her bedroom. My attitude is that its better to have too many than run out :D I am always trying to stock up on wipes but we always seem to either use them or lose them lol.

At the moment I am trying to put £10 a month aside on a asda giftcard so that I have enough aside for the next baby event to go on a spending spree :D

That’s a great idea – I hadn’t thought about doing that either! Thanks for that tip :D

I had said that I would start stocking up on nappies now too but it’s hard when you don’t know what size they are going to need or which ones you’ll get on best with :o At least if I put say £20 on a card each month for the next few months I would have some cash put by to spend on stuff. This would be especially helpful as we are team yellow so I’m not buying many clothes at the moment so I could put the savings on the card towards a few gender specific things when baby arrives :) I think the next Asda baby event will be in January or february as they are usually every 12 weeks and there was one early October.

I’ve already got a pack of Pampers newborns which I only ended up paying 74p for because I had a voucher that I’d been sent from the Boots Parenting Club and I had to buy them to get the free changing bag :) In all honesty I seem to be getting so many vouchers for nappies being sent to me at the moment from all the various parenting clubs. A lot of them seem to be for Pampers but am worried about going and buying a load of Pampers if I then find they aren’t very good and I end up getting stuck with nappies that leak or something :o I’ve also got some Huggies vouchers so might just get a couple of packs of each – some of the vouchers are valid until after bubs is here so I will save those ones till I know what size I need to get.

  • I have a pram! Woot. A Jane Carrera. Hubby's friend has one barely used and in tip top condition so we've bought that off them!

After Christmas, first priority will be the cot and then that's the big things out of the way! Woo! Finally feel like we've made a start!

Does anyone already a parent have any idea how much extra money we'll be needing each week?.

Why not ask advice on the benefits board?

You forget over time how much kids cost per week but if you break it down into items. You'll need:

Formula if not b/feeding breastfeed then...
nappies tenner a week if disposable
Wipes if required about a pound a pack, TESCO unscented are fine.
Nappy cream often doesn't work, free sample sudocrem in bounty pack, free bepanthen online.
Cotton balls not if using wipes
Baby bath stuff nail scissors and a sink.
Steralising tablets - if using a cold water steraliser with DD2 I just breastfed, no bottles, sterilising, pumps et.c. You will need it from 6 months on. I use a big tupperware box as a sterilising container.

This is why i'm stocking up now. Things like cream, wipes and baby shampoo are available on bogoffs and such so i'll just buy in bulk. Never thought there was anything wrong with boots home brand nappies so i'll try them again. And sainsburys.

Stock up on the longer lasting stuff so that it then just needs topping up occasionally. Perhaps when you do your once a month shop you can get one item after baby is born.

I don't think you'll need much else to be honest. It's when they are older and want to come to the shop with you and you were only gonna spend £2 but ended up spending £10 that is costly! :D

You're not kidding! Honestly Dusty I reckon if you do things the simple way you're looking at a tenner a week tops. Baby shampoo lasts ages, ditto baby bath - its bad for them to use too much.

Never heard of them! Hmmmm, I'm a little skeptical about these things. Have you tried using your yet?

I've used them a few times on our own clothes, they're not great at getting stains out but if you have something that just needs refreshing then they're fine. Hope you get on ok with the sample pack.

  • Lol!! I don't have the MIL problem as mine lives in New Zealand - can you get any further away?!!!!

Instead, I have the 'intense' mother problem. She makes me feel like I'm just the surrogate for her next child!!!!

I could understand this if he was living with his parents but with his brother and SIL  that's disgusting. He needs telling! is your MIL aware that he pays nothing? does she condone it?

Whole family is aware. They don't exactly condone it but don't condemn it either- as far as they're concerned it just proves I'm a good wife. OH is waiting to use it against him at some point in the future- but I think four years is enough leverage personally. It was only supposed to be a temporary arrangement when he lost his job years ago, but he has no motivation for moving out/contributing as long as OH maintains that he's the only one allowed to mention it to him. Last time I voiced an opinion and "interfered" with BIL's affairs (literally- told him if he was going to cheat on his wife to at least keep it out of my house/car/general knowledge) it nearly ended OH and my relationship, so really I have to put up and shut up.

This a great idea. When does your maternity leave start? We could use it as a place to share offers/deals/old style tips etc.
I think I may join you if thats ok?

Will be starting the diary on Sunday/Monday- got the idea from the MFW and DFW diaries and thought it would be a good way to keep myself on track.
The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned!
ASHeta = kick that BIL into touch! I'd be happy to help you out!

As for the baby looking after - I'm not sure how to pick one up without looking like a novice! Funny you should mention the shower thing though because I've thought of this. I've a baby chair thing for upstairs and I was going to strap baby in it and bring it into the bathroom with me. As shower is an over the bath type with a clear glass screen I thought I could shower and watch baby at the same time. What do you reckon?

Or, I could just shower when the OH gets home.

I think we've been told! Several times over! :o:o Still a relief to know I wasn't the only one panicking about things like that though.
And how did you get away with no heartburn/indigestion? I had gastritis pre pregnancy so knew I was going to have it bad, but it's still a real pain. I'm on ranitidine for it, but honestly nothing's truly effective and I mostly diet control it.

    Charlie1978- congrats on the pram.
