Pethidine - my friend absolutely loved the stuff. I didn't think it was meant to be a pain killer - it's meant to make you in a way that you don't care.

It came up at the last antenatal class and we were told that if the timing is right it can do wonders. It helps the woman relax and get some rest and in turn can help things move on if things get a bit stuck. We were told it can work wonders with someone who is very tense and stressed and not relaxing even between contractions. Of course I am just going on what the midwives say...I don't know for real.

I'm hoping for a water birth so pethidine isn't an option. But if I have a dry land labour then I'm remaining open to everything (even epidural as much as I don't want one).

  • Congratulations Kat on the safe arrival of Olivia, lovely name!

Lovely pictures Teenie and I love all the bump pictures!!

Thanks for all the suggestions to unblock my ear but it's still blocked so I'm going back to the doctors tomorrow as my antibiotics are now finished and I just don't want another weekend like the last one! I will keep trying the olive oil and steaming though.

I'm also feeling really weird today too, can't put my finger on it but I'm feeling strangely anxious and panicky but I can't pin down why. It's a very odd feeling, one minute I'm worrying bubs is not moving enough, then too much, then I feel too small then too big - arrrggghhh! Hope this feeling passes soon but might mention it to the Doctor tomorrow if I still feel like this in the morning.
I can't even put my birth plan down on paper at the moment I feel that weird about things, however bags are all packed and ready to go!

Anyway, enough rambling, hope all ladies and bumps are well and looking forward to hearing some more baby news soon, there seems a lot of bold ladies again!!

    Hi ladies and bumps.

Still feeling like carp, just not as carp!

I've not really put much thought into my birth plan except for I want to be at the hospital not the midwide led care centre, "just in case". Not really thought about pain relief at all. i expect I will discuss this with my midwife at a later stage.

Congrats on the birth of Olivia kat, Olivia is on my short list for girls names.

Hope everyone is ok, Labout dust to all in need. x x

Congrats Kat on birth of Olivia:). Love the bump and scan pics. From my experience of pethidine I know thats one thing I don't want. Had it when they tried to sort my gallbladder pain. With each shot it became less and less effective so much so I knew the time when the pain would next kick in. It made me feel disorientated at first and out of it. I don't want the feeling of being out of control when in labour.

Lovely bump Fanta, I am also jealous as my belly just seems big all over. Can't imagine why (hiding the 5!! Chocolate tea cake wrappers, oops!!)

Bubs is keeping me' on my toes as well, usually seems like he's active all the time so I worry when he goes quiet. Altho I have found that ice cream gets him going again (purely for medical purposes ;) )

Sorry if tmi, but DTD last night and straight afterwards bump was quite hard, and a bit achy. Still aches now :(. Guess it'll only get more difficult between now and April (oh and then afterwards with a little un to look after!!)

Congratulations Kat, love the name Olivia!

Hope all of you up north get yourselves and families home safe and warm from the snow tonight.

    Em xx
  • i'm 5th! how did that happen! I think i've gone into major nesting mode i've emptied all the kichen cupboards and drawers in the aim to re-jig them (two bin bags of rubbish and out of date stuff:o -mostly condements ect) and cleaned the fridge out, oven is next. Still to pack my hopsital bag, babys is done though. The snow is quite blizzardy here so not attempted to go out. Congratulatons on the new arrivals :j.

Congratulations Kat & Olivia. Not including the bold ladies I'm in the top ten
We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.
  • Lovely bump pic Fanta. I may do one and post, we're similar sizes.

Had my seasonal flu + swine flu vaccine, all fine. The nurse said that the government recommends all pregnant women get it as it can really hit us hard. Can cause pneumonia and other horrible things in the mother, and can even cause a miscarriage. I just think I need to protect myself in order to protect my baby. I deal with members of the public coughing and spluttering around me at my current job, so chances of getting something are pretty high. Really can't be doing with the flu as that is bad enough when you aren't pregnant.
The nurse assured me that the vaccine is not live, so it is impossible to catch flu or swine flu from it. Hope that reassures some of you who may have doubts :)

I am hoping the snow stays away as we want to look at baby stuff Sunday! OH is more enthusiastic about looking at stuff now that 'it's really real'. I think it has helped both of us knowing that we're going to have a little boy, although I've always felt baby's presence so impossible for me to not think it's real.
Still thinking of names, got two I really like, but someone I used to know has earmarked one of those names for her baby which will be born any day now. Still, I'm not going to find a name that hasn't been used before am I :rotfl:

Few buggies I like at the moment are the Quinny Buzz, and M&P Sola and Zoom. Want to give these a good try. Are you allowed to push the demos around the shop to get a feel of them? I realise we may look a bit silly, but hopefully anyone else in there will be in the same boat and not think we've gone mad and pushing an imaginary baby about :rotfl:
Also would like to have a go taking them down and maybe putting in the boot, is this a usual request?

Congrats to Kat on baby Olivia, lovely name :D

Take care everyone who has snow x Keep warm and keep safe.

Congratulations Kat! Olivia is a lovely name, looking forward to seeing a pic.

Re Pethidine - I had it, and would have liked it if my labour had been longer. I found it relaxed me, I was very stressed and scared before I had it - I wasn't one of these superwomen who find a pot of inner strength in the labour room! I was afraid, and very tense, and it did help with that. I found it did help to deal with the contractions, but no-one realised how fast things were going, otherwise they wouldn't have given it. Unfortunately for me it didn't wear off in time for the birth as it's supposed to. I think the problem is, people either find it really good, or they really don't get on with it, but you can't know in advance. I would have it again if I thought labour would take a long time, but with my first being 3 hours, I have to anticipate a quick labour, so I'll not be having it this time I don't think.

Don't completely discount it though, see how you feel, you can always change your mind one way or the other when you are there - it definitely made things easier and calmer for me.
