  • After reading up on Pethidine over the weekend I had kind of decided I would prefer not to have it either as it doesn't too nice :( It's good to hear from someone who had it first hand and to be honest I don't like the sound of what I'm hearing so will ask to give that a miss if at all possible.

I’m a little fed up as I would like to start thinking about a birth plan and pain relief but I can’t really make any decisions. I have to have an appointment with the anaesthetist to discuss my options because I am allergic to codeine and there is a possibility I may be allergic to another drug which is used as anaesthetic. Thing is my appointment isn’t until February when I will be coming up to 34 weeks :o

Until I have seen them I’m not sure what pain relief I can and can’t even consider so even though I have an idea in my head now I may not be able to use those options anyway :(

Little Pickle seems to have woken up now :j giving me some lovely wriggles – I just even saw my belly jump for the first time from the outside they were obviously having a bit of a lie in this morning ;)

Why dont you just put gas and air down for now and then when you have your consultant appointment you can add in 'with the option of X, Y and Z if I ask for it' or something along those lines?

Lots of people only ever need gas and air to get through labour, whats your pain threshold like? I used to think mine was rubbish but then I surprised myself....

Thats what I think I'll have to do until I know exactly what I can and can't put down as possibilities :)

I have to admit my pain threshold is pretty rubbish! In fact I'd go far as to say I am a right wuss but then I might suprise myself as have never really gone through anything that has meant a lot of pain - no broken bones or anything like that.

I know I'm definitely using a TENS machine and am happy to use gas and air but it's if I need anything after that when I become a bit sketchy :o

Still got plenty of time to write a birth plan and all that I just like to be super organised thats all :p

  • Regarding pain... I think you will surprise yourself an awful lot. It is amazing the pain you can withstand if it means not putting your baby into distress and doing the best job you can.

With my DD I had 3 weeks of slow labour. Followed by 4 days of hospital stay. My waters broke on the 3rd day. I was rushed for a C Section on the 4th as the baby had got distressed. I found they coped less than I did.

Probably because they realised their error in that I should have been booked in for a C Section from the off as I was never going to go past 3cm dilated.

Hellu Ladies. Starting to feel nearly human again. Vicks is my friend. On my feet, on my upperlip, on my chest, you name it, I've dabbed some on. Going to do the 2 teaspoons in a hot bowl and clear my head once and for all.

I did have a bit of a monk-on thinking how am I going to be with labour if I can't cope with flu/a really bad cold...but then I remembered you can have drugs at labour so thought that's the difference :)

Thought I'd do a bump pic - I'm 19+3 and bubs is doing somersaults with my laptop on my belly!

I agree with Charlie, you may think your a wuss, but because of what you are actually doing, mentally you can cope really well.

im a wuss with needles and blood etc but I managed with just gas and air and a Tens machine with DD. With DS I thought I had a Tens machine on and believed it worked, until afterwards my Oh informed me they didnt have time to plug it in.

When your in labour you take on this inner strength that comes with knowing you are about to give birth to a beautiful baby and what an amazing job your body does. For parts of it I went into myself and just kept focused and ignored everyone around me. I never screamed or anything as I thought that was wasting vital energy. i just focused it all inside and picture it all happening.

God that sounds so cheesy but its the only way I can describe how I felt at the time.

I remember when I went in with DD and they said I was 6 cm they had to decided then if I wanted pain relief. I asked her how much worse it will get and she said to be honest ive done so well it wont get much worse. That gave me the confidence to go with just G&A.
