Hi, this is my first post, can anyone help, ive been reading the sticky threads and I am not sure whether I would be able to claim for bank charges.

I have a joint card cash account with Halifax (visa electron debit card- no overdraft allowed) for many years. I have a bad credit rating and have not been allowed to upgrade to a current account. We have a fixed salary going in each month but most months we always have direct debits being bounced. Today I have received their standard letter advising that a direct debit for £11.00 (TV licence) was unpaid and I was charged £38.00, I probably had £2.00 in the bank at that time (very very sad I know:( ). To be honest I have years of direct debits being bounced. Would I be able to claim back any of these charges in view of the fact that it's a Card Cash account (basic account). I'm also worried that they would probably cancel this account than get involved with someone with 'the poor account' anyway if I made such a claim?

What annoys me is that people with a current account would be charged much less for bouncing cheques/direct debits which involves exactly the same amount of work than the basic account and costs them .09 pence according to that programme on the telly this week

What do you think ? Thanks for you help

    Hi dreamon,
Dont know if this helps but i to have the same account, have had the account for approx 17 years. They have charged me hundreds of pounds over the years,I am going ahead with my claim and if they close my account i intend to challenge them.It costs them the same to 'bounce' a direct debit on our accounts as a current account!
    I'd say go for it!

Wow, I didn't realise Halifax charge more on their basic accounts than their full current accounts, thats outrageous!!

I don't know if it's any help but I'm more or less the same same as you, I have a dreadful credit score, and I have the equivalent basic cardcash account with Barclays and I'm going ahead with reclaiming with them.

Piling on more and more charges to those with already bad credit and money troubles (especially higher charges than other accounts) just seems like kicking a man when he's down to me.

Take them on and get your money back! Good luck

Great,:T it's so comforting to know that they are other people out there with one of these poor man cards and struggling like me (unlike my friends who are all turning into property developers overnight -- yes I'm bitter and jealous :D ). I'm so glad I found this forum. I have all my statements from years back, ive been keeping them in the hope that I would some day laugh at the state of finance's -- but that hasn't happened   :D .. thanks for your advice .. I'll go for it... thanks a lot

Also just been reading about Capital Card, I had one of those as well, so I get working on that as well

    fingers and legs crossed

Thanks for reply, I'm going for it .. I might try and get another card cash account raised with someone else ijust in case they cancel my account

As for charging more charges for .. yes its true .. it makes me mad

Whilst I'm here can I also bend your here and moan about this :D

About 18 months ago I had some cash to pay in £500.00 (wow) :j .. went to the counter of my local branch and was told they do NOT accept any cash over the counter from Card Cash holders  .. If I had a current account they would take it over the counter  .. So I was directed like a leper to where they had a bundle of envelopes and I had to put the money in two envelopes (max £250 per envelope) fill out my bank account details -- post it through a letter box where it would be collected that evening and credited to my account the following day  ... DISCRIMINATION or what ??

Oh yes when your down, they kick you down even further :embarasse

I wish you the best of luck with Capital. I had £200 limit, went sick, had a breakdown etc etc and ending up owing the over £1000 all made up of charges. I eventually paid it all off and will never use them again. I never thought I would be in a position to try and get some of this money back.

Don't have any catalogue accounts, but did have a Barclaycard.

It's Halifax that are bugging me (see above moan:D )
  • i phoned my bank (halifax) they sent a very long list of charges to mine\and husbands accounts within 7 days after i had listed the full amount we were claiming for they sent us letters saying they would try to resolve it in 4 weeks now on week 2
