Just had a phone call from the Halifax.....they owe me £3778 and I have accepted £3500!! :D Well, I haven't handled my account terribly well and they do have to send me a lot of letters.....

Initially the lady stated that the charges had been applied correctly but would I accept £900 as a goodwill gesture? I said no and she asked me what I would accept. I said £3500 and she instantly came back with £3000....bit of a jump. So I stuck to my guns and I have a letter coming to accept £3500!!

    Am really happy!

Thank you to everyone on this site for the guidance and advice!

Hi new poster just reading through all the stuff about the Halifax of which we bank with and have got 3 accounts with them , the newest is ok up to now ( Apart form 2 £60 charges at the beginning of January then another of £30 then £28 a week later ) but its the first 2 that they have hammered us on in the past , can you claim statements on both ? Just got the template letters to copy out ( in my best handwriting ) and hoping they respond .. any help appreciated .. thanks

  • Hi all...

    What should I do ???

Sent my second letter(the one threatening court action) claiming my charges back yesterday,Total amount: £4174.68 including interest. I offered to accept a lesser amount of £3759 which is the total less the interest. Received today from Halifax a letter offering "as a gesture of goodwill" £2510. What should I do ??. Our letters must have been posted out on the same day as they haven't had time to read my second letter as yet and respond. The upshot is that they've offered £2510 after receiving just the first letter(the one asking for the money back without threatening court action). This should act as encouragement to all you folks out there who are considering reclaiming from the Halifax. I'm not sure what to do now, accept the offer they've made or go for the amount that I want. To be honest I'm suprised they've caved in so easily after receiving just one letter, but this does make me think that they would pay more if I pushed it.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards...Stuart

The offer isn't very good. If you carry on your claim, you will likely get the full amount you are asking for. You just have to be strong.

  • The h'fax received my LBA this morning.

When I got home there was an offer for 50% of the amount claimed.

I am claiming against their credit card outfit, but have been posting letters to Trinity Road - don't see that this should be a problem.

Thinking of calling them tomorrow (the offices in Fife) saying "No Deal" and asking for the full amount. If they agree then all's well. If not, "I'll see you in court" Does this seem like a sound strategy?

One of the conditions for the 50% offer was for the money to be paid onto my c/card. But I don't have the card any more (closed the account) so I'm within my rights to ask for a cheque, aren't I?

I can see the end, I think!
  • Hi

I could do with a bit of advice please, I phoned the Halifax on the 24th Dec and asked for the last 6 years statements, they took the £5 2 days later from my account.

Still not statements up to 3 weeks ago so phoned again and was told they would be sent straight away, and still no statements. so I phoned the number listed on here on Monday and was told they had been ordered but didnt know why they hadn't been sent, and ordered more (beats me why when they had already been ordered)

How long should I give them now before I take it further.

    Thanks

  • hi all :D

further to my posts yesterday, I'm going to give them a call about the charges and see if we can talk into not going to court.

Could anyone offer any advice as to how to structure the coversation? I have a feeling I might just start weeping and saying things like "well you payed everyone else back, why am I not getting an offer" but that doesnt feel too professional!

any help as always would be much appreciated

isabella, if you are keen to deal.... i rang them the day before court action was due. they had offered 820. i rang and asked for 1400 (claim was for 1549). after haggling, i got 1350. i took a reasonable approach allowing a few pound per charge. and to be fair the bloke i spoke with was ok. see martins guide and read it thoroughly for all the info and arguments u need before phoning. you are in a strong position, so don't concede much. they may try to get you to allow £12 for each item. i would not go above £4.50 an item at the most. this is the highest amount that experts think it costs per item. if they wont offer anything good, you only need to hold out for a little longer to get it all back through the courts. be calm and stick to your guns. let us know how it goes.
