How to get a tax rebate inc Tax Code Checker
Comments
-
Hi there, I am convinced that I am due a tax rebate for this tax year as well as the previous, as I was on an emergency tax code for much of both.
I want rebate obviously but it looks as though it might be tricky, as I have been an intermittent temp for the last two years and do not have documentation from all my employers (most temp employers don't hurry to issue a P45 so I've only ever used a P46, and thrown the P45s out - stupidly) or even exact dates, as I wasn't counting!
Does anyone have an idea of how I can go about finding out about rebate and reclaiming? Most of the internet sites I've been to including HMRC have not been able to tell me much.
Any advice appreciated - any temps who have been in the same situation?0 -
HELP!
I'm trying to find out about my mother in laws tax for her. Unfortunately in jan last year(2010) she lost her husband and the tax has been a nightmare ever since. First she got a big rebate, then was told she'd been over paid an even bigger amount. she's been given 3 different tax codes in 12 months.
She's over 65 = allowance of £9490
State pension = £5077.80
Private pension = £10,745.40
After the HMRC have taken the state pension off the allowance (leaving£4416) they have given a tax code of 441P to the private pension company.
The tax code calculator dosen't except this. Can anyone tell me if this is correct???
Surely if the private company takes off enough tax to cover both pensions they need the 949P code???
Also what is taxable, all income or anything over the tax code amount (eg 949P = only income after the first £9490 is taken into account is taxable)
Sorry if this is a bit confusing, but I am confused!!! we have phoned HMRC numerous times but this only seems to make matters worse!!!:mad:0 -
She's over 65 = allowance of £9490
State pension = £5077.80
Private pension = £10,745.40
Total income ......... £15822
Personal allowance .. £9490
Taxable income ....... £6332
Tax due (at 20%) .... £1266
The above is how you calculate the overall tax due for the year. As State Pension is taxable - but paid gross - then HMRC deducts it from the personal allowances (PA). And then the remaining PA (£4413) is simply applied via her Code number to the other pension ie :-
Pension ............ £10745
PA ................... £4413
Taxable ..............£6332 @ 20% = £1266
Same result = no problem = that's how it works! If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

I got the dreaded 'because we changed our system you now owe us £4,972 from 2008-9 and 2009-10' letter. Numerous phone calls followed with very polite young people from all over the country all saying they were sorry but I owed the money and there was no appeal, please pay up immediately. Fed up with phoning I dug out all my tax code letters (all 14 over about 2 years) and eventually found one from 2007 which said roughly 'we are aware you have a pension and a salary - you will be due to pay tax at 40% and we have adjusted your tax code accordingly THIS SHOULD SORT IT OUT' (my caps). I copied this with my letter asking for consideration under Extra Statutory Concession A19 and listed all 14 other tax codes. I just got the letter saying "I agree that you do not have to pay the following amounts. (Then listing my 'underpayments over 2 years) I agree to this under HMRC's Extra Statutary Concession A19". Yippee! :jKeep your tax code statements, folks, you never know when you need them!0

1 i've been trying to check if my husbund's(UNDER 60) tax code were correct, every time i did it the figures were different.
i looked at the P60 for the following years:
2008-2009 -13,588.06- 603L
2009-2010-14,944.86- 647L
am i doing it correctly, sorry about the silly question?
2 i have just recently received my PAYE Coding notices.the first one states personal allowance £7475, other earnings £3983, a tax free amount of £3492 so the tax code is 349L and the second is: balance of tax allowances £3983,a tax free amount of £3983 so the tax code is 398T. Is this correct?

The basic codes for 08/09 and 09/10 and 10/11 and 11/12 are 603L / 647L / 647L and 747L respectively. So your husband looks OK?
Your Code(s) are the puzzle. According to what you say you have 2 seperate Coding Notices and both of which appear to be from April (ie 2011-12). I presume you have 2 jobs and have asked for the allowance to be split? Codes 349 and 398 correctly add up to the overall personal allowance. But .......... for each Code how much will you earn from that job? As getting the split wrong could lead you to overpay. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

If you work both jobs then splitting the allowance is sensible - if one of them doesn't pay you more than £7475 in the year? If one pays more than £7475 then it may be more sensible to put the whole allowance there and have Code BR on the 2nd one. What do your P60s show for 09-10? And is the income likely to remain in those sort of proportions? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

The one of them is just few days a month job, much lower than £7475, the other could go over £7475 but that is rather unlikely.
my p60 for 2010 says 647L and total for the year was £2583.90 and yea i do not think that the income will change a lot as from what it is now
thank you0
