• Hello,
retired in June 2007 & drew my pension, but continued working for the next three years as a contractor employed through an Employment agency.
Using my own car for work I claimed costs at 41p/mile which the employment agency taxed me on but included in PAYE income for each year.
I wrote to HMRC in July 2008 querying this and asking if this was correct, received NO reply, rang again & told it would be dealt with by customer services-no reply!
In February this year I filled in a P87 form for each year indicating mileage & expenses claimed after receiving a tax demand.
I have just received a P800 tax calculation which shows [a] My car expenses are being include in my PAYE income-is this correct? & The mileage allowance relief indicated on the submitted P87 appears as Taxable Expenses Payment on the latest P800-this also seems wrong.
There is also an issue of the wrong tax code being used for2008/2009 & 2009/2010 ie BRX but 2007/2008 was DOX
Bearing in mind I wrote to HMRC in July 2008 concerning my expenses would I have any claim under A19 & are my assumptions re expenses not being part of my PAYE income correct?
• Would it not be a good idea to explain that, for 65 - 75 year-olds, the gross state pension should be deducted from the personal allowance?

65 thru 100+ ?

When can you be sure that someone is really dead ?

Feel for their pulse? Hold a mirror over their mouth to see if they are still breathing?

No! when you eventually extract a letter from HMRC saying they have paid their last income tax.

It helps if you read it? From the intro to the tax code checker :-
Income from state pensions will also be subtracted from your personal allowance. If your total taxable deductions exceed the personal allowance available you will have a negative coding - where a K is used.
Make sure you fill out a P616 (pension enquiry form) which will be sent to you by HMRC as you approach retirement age. This will help to ensure you are put onto the right tax code from the outset.

Hi, not sure if I am grasping at straws to get some rebate (just been made redundant so every little helps!!), most of the codes I have checked over past few years just say correct or £5.00 difference so neither here nor there but I have a query for a job I had for the tax year 2009-2010.

My tax code was 647L - earnings £17366.18 BUT, my basic salary was £15300, from July-Dec I had a £400 car allowance per month which I guess is included in the £17366.18 salary, would this make a difference at all to the tax code?

Thanks
Sue
• got all excited when I read that the tax codes could be wrong.:j Dug out my husbands old P60. Went on the site calculator and it said he could be on the wrong code:j.
I didn't want to stir up a can of worms and end up having to pay extra so I went online to find the different years' tax codes and came across this site
www.uktaxcalculators.co.uk/how-to-calculate-tax.php
which works out what the tax code is and what you should have paid in tax etc.
Unfortunately we will Get nothing:(
See if it'll help you, it saved me a whole lot of hassle.
• Hi All,

I was made redundant at the end of October, so was caliming Job Seekers. I January I started a Temp job for 2 1/2 weeks, for which I was emergency taxed, whilst my collegue who was made redundant in december had a tax rebate!!!. Start of Feb I satarted a full time job, and have noticed that my tax code now has M1 at the end, which I believe is emergency tax again.

I have sent my P!! form off to my employer, so understood why i was taxed this way for my first month, but i have just recieved my wage slip for my 2nd month, and it has nopt changed.

Whats the best way of trying to get this sorted out, through work, or through my local tax office?

looking ofrward to your advise

Donna

My code is 425P and I'm 69. On the tax-checker I assumed "earnings"="income" (private+state pension), but this told me there was a shortfall of £9940 in my personal allowance. I re-did the entry using only my private pension, but got the same result. However, the way the taxman calculates - correct allowance minus taxfree State pension - does, of course, give 425. Where am I going wrong?

No; I agree with scrubber that it's not clear: see my post#249.

No; I agree with scrubber that it's not clear: see my post#249.

What is unclear about :
Income from state pensions will also be subtracted from your personal allowance

...... which is the bit claimed to be omitted?

On your own post - if you put in the correct tax year / the correct age band and the correct code (inc the suffix 'P'). Then for any value of total income up to £24k it will tell you that 'the tax code you've input says your tax free allowance was £4250 - £4259'. That 'your personal allowance would have been £9940'. And 'there's a difference of £5690 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect.'

But if you then read the 'see below' ..... the very first 'typical reason' is :
You are also receiving a State or private pension

As you're aparently well aware that is the reason your Code is reduced to 425. And as the 'P' denotes you're entitled to the full age allowance (therefore total income not over £24k). Then ...... I'm unclear what the problem is?
