How do I go about sorting this out?

Impossible to say without some figures? Could be tax / NI / SLC. And bear in mind that most checkers aren't brilliant on a monthly basis.

Post some figures off your last payslip (inc tax code) if you want the figures analysing.

  • I contaced HMRC, I have been advised that Tax code 647L is a new code that has just been created, Is this true?

I started a new job in July, with new wage I have been on tax code 635L from July-Dec 10, latest payslip (Mth 10) now has Tax Code 647L. My understanding that Tax code 647L is for period April 10 - April 11, surely my prevoius wage slips should have been on Tax Code 647L, however been advised with new tax code taking place any refunds would have been calculated and show on my payslip.

Which is correct (provided no 'Month 1' or similar after the 647). Difference between 635 and 647 is minor (£24 tax in a full year if you're paying 20%) ..... so it will tend to show as less tax in the month rather than a refund.

647L isn't 'new' ...... it's been the basic Code for the last 2 years.

I have entered my husbands tax codes for the years 2005/2006- 2006-2007/ 2007-2008. Each result has come up with a difference and advising the tax codes may be wrong. 2005-2006 his tax code was 503L, the checker reckons there is a difference of £135 on this one, 2006-2007 his tax code was 522L, the checker reckons the difference is £185 and for 2007-2008 his tax code was 543L,the checker comes up with a difference of £205. Can someone please tell me if this means he has overpaid or underpaid his tax, i have the figures of his salary and tax paid for these years but cant seem to work out who owes who, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

It doesn't mean he has overpaid or underpaid.

What it does mean is that his tax code is higher than the normal and therefore he pays less tax. He is therefore getting an allowance for something.

What do his P2 coding notices say?

Hi Jem, thanks for writing back. Im not sure what a P2 is :(, he was in the army for 12 years and got out at the end of 2008 but has never had an allowance for anything, dont know if that helps.

A P2 is the notice you get which explains how your tax code is made up - he would have got one each tax year.

It's possible he was entitled to extra allowance for being in the army - I don't know.

If you don't know and have no P2 coding notices then phone up HMRC and ask.

He never received a P2 notice in any of the years in the army, we have only just noticed his tax code changed each year, we thought as it was the same job it would be same code throughout, sorry really dont know much about the tax system. So, should we just phone hmrc and see if they can check it out for us? And if so, do you know where we can find the number? Thanks again, really appreciate your advice. x

The personal allowance changes most years .... which usually increases the basic Code number.

To contact HMRC look at the Reference on his latest P60 .... and put it into here :-

Hi Mike, we just checked his latest P60 and the Employers Reference window is blank :( Maybe this is due to it being the army? i really dont know. All very confusing, maybe we would be best leaving it, thanks for the link x
