  • No, NI is a completely different calculation and the two are not linked.

I'm getting very confused with all this tax code checking and I'm tieing myself in knots!! Wonder if anyone can advise...for as long as I can remember I have been on tax code 647L. Then in mar 2009 I got a new job which paid me a car allowance(code stayed 647L). In mar 2010 I got a company car. My code changed to 513L. then at the beginning of december I got a letter saying I had underpaid and owed £189 and code changed again to 429L my employer tells me it is due to the previous years car allowance. I work 32 hours a week. I also do extra varying hours bank work (anything from no extra hours to 50 extra hours a month)for the same employer which gets paid seperately but is the same tax code as my main pay. Does this sound right? Sorry its so convoluted, thanks in advance x

From the way you phrase it ........ it sounds totally wrong and implies you're getting a chunk of personal allowance twice. But if it's the same Code (429L) that's taking co-incidence too far. You need to talk to your employer as to how they're calculating the pay for the two jobs.

If they're calculating the bank work quite seperately then they should be operating Code BR on that (20% tax on everything). If, however, they're simply adding them together to do the PAYE / NI calculation and then paying you pro-rata ........... it's an odd way to do it, but they should be getting the tax deduction correct overall.

  • I've looked through the whole thread and can't find anything on this subject so forgive me if I have repeated someone else.

I have my p45/p60 etc but just taking a glance at a few payslips, I noticed that my tax code changes on the odd month. On the P45 it does say "final" tax code, but should I be paying attention to the various ones on the payslips that have changed throughout the year?
Has anyone else had this experience?

Yes you should be taking notice.

What tax code are you on now and what were you on previously?
  • Finally got round to checking this. When I changed employer in January 2010 my tax code wasn't changed. They were still reducing my allowance for benefits I wasn't receiving. They owe me £500 - nice January bonus :-)))))
    Wins: CD...

Trying to reduce CC by £2000 by 31/12...

It isn't from HMRC ..... because you have never provided an email address to them? So how could it be?

And I wouldn't say they were professional ... albeit they have improved over the last 18 months when I was getting up to 12 a day.

As well as a couple of spelling errors (I recollect 'payed' instead of 'paid') they sign of with something like 'kind regards'. Which simply isn't 'Government Department' language!

ok guys, just to save me reading all these pages and getting even more confused...

I have a tax code of 653L, i don't get any tax credits or any other benefits, no company cars etc etc. I've worked with my current employer for 1year and almost 1 month and before that i was unemployed for around 3months but never signed on (i know i should have done). My tax code with my previous employer before being unemployed for a while was 647L. I worked for them for just over 2 years.

Help??? I've got debts so any bonus cash would be very useful!

    Markus :)

You wouldn't be getting any bonus cash if your tax code is wrong - you would be owing HMRC tax.

You have an extra allowance of £60 on your tax code - uniform washing allowance perhaps? This means you pay £12 less in tax each year.

The only possible rebate you might be due is for the tax year in which you worked for 3 months less but without figures no-one can say.
