You're independently taxed - so there's no link between you on the PAYE system ...... unless you work for the same Company.

  • I'm really confused if i've been overpaying or not, was wondering if someone can cast there eye over it. My situation is working full time, overhalf not working. We do claim for Tax Credits/Child Benefit. I did have a company car prior to 2003, but nothing since.

    2009-10 £30609.65 380L
    2008-09 £34513.53 336L
    2007-08 £31280.55 255L
    2006-07 £29229.68 236L
    2005-06 £27795.26 222L
    2004-05 £24962.13 207L

    Cheers in advance...

Can't tell anything from that, I'm afraid. Except that your Code numbers are consistently lower than the basic personal allowance for each year (eg Code 380L for 09-10 translates to an allowance of £3800. Whereas the basic allowance for someone up to 65 is £6475. So £2675 has been witheld)

You should have a P2 (Coding Notice) from HMRC issued Feb / Mar each year showing what is witheld and why? And / or a P11D from your employer if they're providing something (car / fuel / medical insurance) which is a 'benefit in kind'. From the value witheld - and the consistency for each year - it doesn't look like an underpayment for earlier years. So I would get onto HMRC fairly quickly if you no longer have a car / P11D. As the value witheld translates to an overpayment around £500pa ..... if there are no benefits in kind / earlier underpayments.

  • Hi. Mike.

Thanks for you reply, I have no P2 or P11D at all that I could find last night.
As far as I know, I've never uderpaid in my life, HMRC have never let me know anyway.
I have no car/fuel/Medical allowances. So it's time to get on the phone.

    Thanks Again

Hi ........ yes you need to contact them. It wouldn't be the first time the benefit in kind for a car has simply been carried forward year after year.

But fairly unusual (in my limited experience) that you're not getting a P2 for what is a fairly personalised Code Number. However .... give them a ring as it needs sorting ..... and could be a £fruitful call.

I haven't seen the answer to this stated in the article or followup - maybe its almost too dumb a question :)

I have done a tax return (online on the HMRC service - using their calculations for the liabilities) for the last several years - even when the tax office has not requested one (they keep changing their mind on whether they need one from me). Presuming I put the right figures into this, even if the tax codes for those years was wildly wrong, it should have all been corrected when the tax liability for the year was calculated and submitted - or am I wildly over estimating the efficiency and effectiveness of the tax office?

I also assume that the tax code I am being given is being adjusted based on those returns, so aside from changes in circumstances (I had 2 years where there were some changes due to inheritance and company share changes, but things should be stable now), the tax code ought to be pretty much right...

    Nigel.

That's totally correct. As it goes all the way back to a basic computation ...... starting off with your personal allowance set at £6475 (assuming under 65). So - if you get the input right ....... the output will be right.

You're getting a 'back to basics; check. Most of the problems are pure PAYE ........ where people are simply never checking their Code Numbers.
