You can't, I'm afraid, draw that conclusion. As all the Codes are (just) different to the basic Code for the year - there will generally be a reason for it. For example - in the last couple of years, the Code you've posted is consistently just above (not 'under') the basic personal allowance. And looks to be something like 'laundering of uniform / professional subscription'? Normally something that's been applied for?
The run of '494T' are the only ones that look odd .... as the 'T' indicates something that's under review by HMRC.
For all of these - you should have a P2 (Coding Notice) that tells you why there is a difference to the norm? Without that - only HMRC can advise why there's marginal differences to the basic allowance. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi All!
Just a quick questions and sorry if it seems really obvious but when I have typed in my codes this message comes up
There's a difference of £5 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect.
Does that mean there is only £5 ot claim for each tax year this message comes up?
Thanks in advance for your help! x0 -

No, it doesn't mean that at all.
All the tax code checker can tell you is that the code you entered is different from the standard basic tax code that would normally be allocated to anyone aged under 65 with only one job and no taxable benefits / deductions or reliefs.
Since you say the differences are only £5 - have you entered the codes correctly ?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
You need to check his P2 Coding Notice which HMRC should send at the start of each tax year.
If he does not have a P2 notice, then phone HMRC to ask them to explain how they calculated the code and ask for a copy.
Hi, he phoned the office and they said that he dosent pay the £3000 for the van its £750, so he asked why the code was still so low as he has no other benifits and she replyed that you only recive 20% of personal tax allowance. He asked for a coding notice 2 be sent out. Is this true? Many thanks:)0 -
Hi ........ yes you need to contact them. It wouldn't be the first time the benefit in kind for a car has simply been carried forward year after year.
But fairly unusual (in my limited experience) that you're not getting a P2 for what is a fairly personalised Code Number. However .... give them a ring as it needs sorting ..... and could be a £fruitful call.
Hi Mike. Just an update, I phone the HMRC the other day, turns out that they still thought I had a company car from 2003.....So been paying for that since....They have corrected my code and a refund for this year should be adjusted in next months pay also will recieve a cheque for last tax years over payment. I just need to write them a letter for the previous years for them to look into, but should be straight forward. So thanks again, will update on my success.

Excellent. I bet (expect £7475 .... Code 747 .... from April 2011) you'll be checking your Code carefully from now on!
I'm going to suggest to HMRC they head them 'Statement of the tax you will pay this year!' ...... from now on! It should make people check them a bit more than most do at the moment? If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Hi,
I've put my details in on the Tax Code Checker and it says "There's a difference of £675 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect."
Does this mean that I've paid too much tax or not enough???
My details are:
Tax Year - 2010/2011
Salary - £16k
Tax Code - 715L
Thanks!

Neither. It simply means that you have an extra allowance on your tax code for reasons that we do not know. You need to look at your P2 coding notice to see why your tax code is 715L.My details are:
Tax Year - 2010/2011
Salary - £16k
Tax Code - 715L
Thanks!

If the tax code is wrong and there is no reason for the extra allowance then you have underpaid tax.0 -
