My tax code for year end 07 is 472L, after using checker it says that my code is for £4720-4729 and that I should have been on the code for £5035.

I presume I am owed so therefore need to ring? I have no benefits that would alter my tax code.

    .

It can only - and does - tell you that the standard basic code for someone under 65, for that year, is £5035.

It then goes on to list a number of reasons - and points out there are others - why the difference you see might be genuine. If you haven't got a P2 (Coding Notice) and/or P11D for that year to ratify the lower code ..... then give them a ring as they won't look at 06-07 otherwise.

As I understand it now, everyone pays for their company car to some extent. I think the minimum is that they calculate the value as a benefit in kind, and you have to pay the tax on it as though you were paid a higher salary.

A friend who is a field engineer has just got a new company car, with full maintenance and fuel paid for. That's a benefit in kind worth many thousands a year, and as a result, he has to pay well over £100/month extra tax - more than I actually spend on my car!

If you've not got private fuel allowance, it cuts down the benefit in kind calculation, and the same again if you're paying towards the lease. But if you couldn't maintain the same car privately for less money, it's a benefit being paid to you even if you're contributing, and you'll get taxed on it.

oh, okay, i get it - actually i prob couldn't maintain the car privately for less (i pay towards lease, but not for insurance, repairs, servicing or road tax\0. i don't get personal mileage allowance (i think!), but if i do more private miles than business miles in the year, i get taxed extra i think. my business mileage expenses are pretty poor though (11p per mile) - i'm out of pocket about 3p per mile at the moment with current petrol prices, which i think ought to count against the tax (i know it never will - but in an ideal world!)
  • Can the tax office work out any tax owed just from a National Insurance Number? I don't have a P45 from either of my jobs last year and although I have contacted both several times, neither is coming up with it. I didn't work for the whole 12 month period but did pay tax so presume I'm entitled to something. I know I'm stupid for not taking note of my earnings and tax payments but have learnt my lesson am hoping that I may still be able to claim. Who would I be best to contact? Thanks.
  • The tax code K137 is for benifits above my tax allowance.

Guess if it says that they are due us £££

There's a difference of £55 between the tax free allowance suggested by age & salary, and the one from your tax code. Unless you have any other income, or deductions (see below), it appears your tax code could be incorrect.

This is just below where is show the figure!

Does this mean my tax code's wrong?
Unless you have any other income, or deductions, your tax code could be incorrect. Remember, this is only a rough check, but it suggests your tax code doesn't match your age and salary
  • I'm so pleased to see the issue of wrong tax codes being highlighted here. In July I started applying for a mortgage. It was only when I had a few months payslips together that I noticed I paid £100 less tax one month than the previous months. I took my payslips to my employer and asked him if he knew why. We studied the slips for ages until he spotted that my tax code had changed at the start of this financial year.
I phoned our pay department and they confirmed I had got the wrong tax code last year and said I would need my old P60s to see how long the problem ahd been going on for. It was suggested it was probably just that year, as I had been on maternity leave and probably been put on the wrong code when I returned.

Long story a bit shorter - I was on the wrong tax code for 5 years and a couple of months ago received a tax rebate of £6800!!! I had never really checked my tax code and to be honest I wouldn't have known what it meant anyway so I think this tax code checker is a brilliant idea :)

You need to check his P2 Coding Notice which HMRC should send at the start of each tax year.

If he does not have a P2 notice, then phone HMRC to ask them to explain how they calculated the code and ask for a copy.
