As a complete dummy when it comes to anything remotely financial I have a simple question. and sorry I am a teacher.... which means that I have a teachers' pension. Does that mean that my tax code will be different from the 'standard' 647L and would it make it a lower number ???? also what does a /N mean after the code. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you mean you are currently working as a teacher and paying into the teachers' pension scheme then no it will make no difference at all. You will still be on the standard 647L tax code - although you could apply for extra allowance for professional subs.

No idea what /N means - it's not a normal letter used for tax codes.
  • Thank you jem16 .That is exactly what I meant! and I am currently trying to find out where i need to go and what I need to do for the extra allowance for my professional subs which we have just been reminded to do at work. Thanks again
  • Thanks so if I'm reading it right that 208approx a year so about 600 - 800 since 2005? Do you know how long it takes to refund? Could really do with it if I am owed it!

You simply phone up HMRC and ask for the extra allowance for both GTC subs and union fees (if you pay them). You can also have it backdated for 6 years.

    Around about that, yes.

Could be around 6 weeks. Your current rebate for this tax year will happen as soon as they use the corrected tax code but you'll need to wait for the other years.

Not sure where you're getting the Code numbers from and whether they're the 'final' one for the year? I'll respond on the basis they are.

04-05 ..... worth querying as BR suggests no personal allowance. (and you're still 'in time')
05-06 ..... correct Code for the year so unlikely to be a problem.
06-07 ..... the Month 1 indicates you could have overpaid - worth a query

The final 3 years all have the correct Code so there shouldn't be a problem. Except you mention Health Insurance and P11Ds. Which implies the employer paid that - therefore your Code Number for those years should be reduced from the norm? Creating an underpayment if that's the case.

On a seperate thread .... 'cos this one's getting crowded! Post your P60 details :- Year / Code Number / Gross Pay / Tax ...... and someone will look it over for you? (and ask any questions if anything looks odd)
