Not necessarily. If he has a car (and fuel allowance?) the reduction in allowances can be significant. Have a look at his P2 (Coding Notice) and the P11D from his employer. The reductions in the P2 should hold hands with the benefit shown on the P11D.
With car allowance / fuel allowance / medical Insce et al ..... not unusual to have a negative code (ends with 'K')If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I find this "tool" confusing. It asks for total income (I have a state plus 2 private pensions) and then it says there is a difference which could be due to........."you might be receiving a private pension" Doh!
The simplest way to check if you paid correct tax is to take your P60 (if more than one like myself - add up the totals). Take the total pre tax amount and take away your personal allowance. what is left should be taxed at 20% up to total pre-tax annual income of £37400 and at 40% on anything more than that. Took me about 15mins on a spreadsheet. Found out I underpaid £85 last year so waiting for them to catch up to me

and take away your personal allowance.
Assuming, of course, your personal allowance is correct!
For most people with the state pension witheld from the PA and the clawback of the age related allowance for incomes (inc interest) above £22900 ...... you can see the glazed look even on a forum. Getting the PA correct in the 1st place is the key to it all ..... it can't be taken on trust as these millions (?) of underpayment notices for 08-09 and 09-10 are proving.
But I do tend to agree about the 'checker'. It's fine for those on Code 647L ............ but they tend not to be the ones needing assistance. And those that do ....... don't read the notes. Let alone the P2 / P11Ds that they received earlier. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

I used the calculator and for me it showed I was owed £7,660 over the years.
It's a 'checker' not a 'calculator' .......... and it checks allowances not tax due. So what is it you're using? As it's certainly not the subject of this thread. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I have an update for my previous message.
HMRC told me that the change in my tax code for this year was due to a university job from over two years ago that failed to produce a P45 when the contract ended. When I asked why that hadn't affected my tax code last year the assistant told me that some employment details are only now starting to be updated on their systems. Regardless, she said that my tax code will be changing to 647L and that the overpaid tax will be repaid through my wages.
I'm going to wait and see what they actually do before I even think about celebrating but, if they do come through with it, that may mean an extra £300 towards my overdraft.
Thank you, Martin.0 -
Hi Following on from my post last nite. I have contacted HMRC who told me that my tax code should be 647L. The problem seems to be an error I work in Local Government and from 2002 until 2009 I was a visiting Officer so received essential car user and mileage which involved calculations made by the tax office. My wages dept gave me copies of two letters that showed the authority made an agreement with the Inland Revenue that wef 1st April 2005 that due to a new payroll sofware provider that tax car mileage payments would be made at source. A list of everyone on this was sent and the tax code was adjusted sto I should have been on the equivilent of the current day 647L back to 1/4/05.
HMRC say they will amend my code to 647L back to this year but I have to write and ask for the previous years to be amended, I've sent that letter today enc the copies of the letters it does seem to be just me as all the other Visiting Officers are on 647L and have always been on the normal coding. I'm told I've been paying it twice.
Has anyone got any idea of what the refund will be please? I could only find P60's for 2006 code was 281L 2009 was 512L 2010 was 556L and I'm currently on 543L.
Very grateful to have been on this site to prompt me to check, I do feel very foolish I just assumed that if your on PAYE you are deducted the correct tax, I will check my husbands but he does get benefits so that maybe more complicated.
Thank you again for advice0 -
Hi everyone,
I've actually been a "geek" the whole time I've been working (10 years) and kept all my P60s and Coding Notices (and P11D forms up until a few weeks ago when I chucked them - d'oh!)
I wasn't worried about the checker showing my code anomoly in 2007-08 and 2008-09 because I got a healthcare scheme through work. However, I didn't receive coding notices in those years and my final in year in the SAME JOB they made my code 647L despite a pay rise?! Seems strange...
So will they laugh me off the phone if I ring and enquire without the P11D information? I also want to ask about some other years specifically 2004-05 when I had a most unusual code (never noticed before!) BRX. I've gathered that's a high base rate tax code so I may have overpaid?
Any help with whether or not I would potentially be wasting HMRC's time would be higely appreciated!!

As a complete dummy when it comes to anything remotely financial I have a simple question. and sorry I am a teacher.... which means that I have a teachers' pension. Does that mean that my tax code will be different from the 'standard' 647L and would it make it a lower number ???? also what does a /N mean after the code. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks0

You have a lower personal code of around £1040 at the moment. 20% tax on that is £208 - that's how much extra tax you are paying over the year.0
