I'm actually beyond advanced driving I believe, as like the police I also go through red lights, and speed when I am having an emergency.
I don't use indicators when I observe the cars around me, when I see them fail to observe me I then realise there is no point in indicating.
Other drivers also believe in my powers, as quite often they happily toot me and wave.

How do we know advanced drivers never indicate when there's no one to see them?
All we have is their word for it.
  • If an indicator ticks in the middle of Scotland but noone is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

UP seems incapable of understanding that it isn't always necessary to indicate and that its lazy not to.He/she is entitled to their learner driver level comprehension opinion. The rest of us who have actually progressed beyond novice driving can think differently.

when you are a learner driver ever heard the term "mirror, SIGNAL, manoeuvre? Not mirror, dont give a crap about anyone around you, manoeuvre is it???
Let's consult the highway code, shall we? Click here to read rule 159. I'll stand well back before you read the "if necessary" part.
If you were taking your practical driving test and failed to use your indicators what do you think would happen?
Ask a driving examiner and get back to us.
I am not aware if it is legal or not, just had a quick google and to my surprise nothing obvious came up to tell me if you could get points for not using them correctly or not anyone know?.
There is no specific offence. You cannot be fined solely for omitting an indicator, even a necessary one. The closest offence that can be committed is driving without due care and attention, for which a police officer must witness your driving falling below what is expected of a careful and competent driver. In practice, this means witnessing a non-intentional collision or very near miss.
    I cannot believe my eyes!

We'll never win, I think all parties agree indicators are used to tell other people your intentions, mortals like me believe there may be other people to see them, who I have not seen, while advanced drivers believe they have seen everything, and if they have not seen other people, the only reason can be there is no-one there, and any admission of fallibility proves you are a poor driver beyond doubt.

Complete tosh from yet another lazy cant be arsed person check this rule out which does actually bare some relevance to this thread:

Look people you can go on all you want at the end of the day there is NO justification for not using your indicators and if you think there is then you really need to question your own behaviour and safety behind the wheel!

I will always indicate, as even though I hate ninja cyclists, I like to give them a sporting chance when they try to undertake me when I'm turning left, even if they want to stay in my blindspot.

As an ex driving instructor, I can assure you that as far as the driving test and the DSA are concerned you can and people have failed the test for giving unnecessary signals which may confuse other motorists.

As others in this thread have said it is considered completely pointless to signal just for the sake of it and if there is no other vehicle involved.

All signalling is a considered operation to tell other motorists what your intention is, for example if turning left or right then a signal should be given in case a vehicle is approaching the junction in the road you are turning into, however you should not signal when pulling in after an overtaking manoeuvre as the driver of the vehicle you have overtaken already knows that you are going to pull in you are not going to carry on driving on the wrong side of the road, if on a dual carriageway or motorway you should not drive in the overtaking lanes so you should pull back in without indicating.
  • NOWHERE in the highway code does it say "only use your indicators if there are other motorists around" so the fact you can take something as important as the highway code and then re-write it
UnderPressure, although I firmly have my foot in your camp and indicate at all times(or rather when I have to), I wouldn't put all your stock in the highway code which (IMO) is nothing more than an advisory pamphlet which has some rules that make reference to the relevant road traffic law.
A lot of the HC is nothing more than common sense and for those who have other road interests there is other reading material out there, be it aimed at cyclists/motorcyclists, horse riders, advanced drivers.
Just because it is in the HC doesn't make it law, take the reference to cyclists and HV clothing and/or safety hats. Just because the HC says you should wear them doesn't mean you have to, no law is being broken if you don't!(please don't let this get into an anti-cyclist rant, I was only using this as an example)
