So long as you don't add anything to them or cook them they remain fresh strawberries. By mashing them you do nothing but change the cell structure of the fruit which would have no impact on its calorific value. Juicing is different because you remove the fibre so I understand that but mashing. That's a step too far! I say keep your syns.
If fruit is mashed, cooked, pureed or whatever it should be synned because it makes it easier to eat more than you normally would.
That's the official line!
Using common sense, I always thought if I want one banana mashed I wouldn't syn it because it's one banana whether I eat it whole or not. The problems start when you have it often and gradually it becomes two bananas......we all know how easy it is for things to get a little out of hand - I call it tweaking and tweaking the plan leads to very unhappy members eventually.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
smoothies are the whole fruit, there composition is not changed, but it is very easy to consume a lot of calories with smoothies0

I remember making smoothies a few years ago... they are dangerous despite their healthy contents!
I remember including 3 bananas, loads of strawberries, raspberries, grapes, 1 apple, juice of 2 oranges and ice to make a smoothie - i could never eat that amount of fruit in one sitting! Yet in a smoothie it didnt even touch the sides!! :eek:All hail to the sale!!!!!!
new beginnings...... new successes..0 -

Thanks ConsultantI only mashed one banana and it was actually still quite lumpy, so I`ll count myself as being syn free that time. I could have had it after the toast, but then I would have put something on the toast which would probably have been a syn anyway. I`ll just make a note not to do it too often.

Heyy
Would it be okay if i started posting on here? I'm not involved in slimming world but I'm on a diet and hoping to loose a little bit more weight and I would just like some support from other people on diets. I have currently lost 3 and a half stone and I would like to loose one and a half more

Mashed or blended in a smoothie, the composition of the fruit IS changed - it breaks down the cell walls, which makes the nutritious goodness inside more readily digestable - great if you need a vitamin boost, not so great for dieters if your body isn't expending so much energy (i.e. using calories) to break down the food.
We also have an optimal number of chews that we need to get through to satisfy our behavioural need to chew. Less chews = body not registering you've eaten hence less satisfying and easier to take in more calories.Nothing tastes as good as riding a horse feels0 -
