Burnt my mouth when eating at pub

Daft title I know but didn't know what to say or if i've got the right part of the forum so apologies if not.

On Tuesday 19th Oct my family and I went to a pub on our way to Manchester Airport for a holiday abroad. I ordered some garlic mushrooms and when I bit into the first one I got some scalding liquid which dribbled out of my mouth and down my chin. Sounds amusing now but it hurt that much I was crying. The (one member) of staff was apologetic and got me some ice in a towel to cool it down. I had a pink lip and a pink line down my chin and it was seriously sore. The next day when we flew abroad it wasn't too bad, but the day after that it scabbed over leaving an unsightly lump on my lip and a very prominent line down my chin (about 2 inches long). I was so mortified. Here I was on holiday looking what I felt, very disfigured. The line gradually started to heal, but the lip got worse (with the heat and humidity). It scabbed over and then would peel, it eventually got ulcers all over it and was red raw. We have now returned home and it is finally clearing up but my lip is still scabbed over trying to heal. We did not take photos on holiday because we forgot the camera (great). I have taken some when I got back but despite it being nearly 2 weeks since it happened the photos really don't give it justice.

Where do I stand with this. My parents think I should write and complain. I feel aggrieved that we paid over £40 for the meal but at the time we paid for it we were unaware of the damage the burn had caused.

Does anyone have any constructive advice? Thank you

You could always try a simple letter to the restaurant outlining your complaint and seeing what they say.

However, deep fried garlic mushrooms are going to be hot, so it might be a tad embarrassing having to admit you didn't know that.

It's a bit like that case in the US which has resulted in McDonalds having to warn us all on our coffee cups that hot coffee is hot as apparently that is a surprise to some people.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: This has got to be a wind up. Even a child knows to blow on food if it's too hot or wait until it cools down a bit.

Edit: Sorry, you were after some constructive advice - grow up and learn to eat properly! Hope that''s constructive enough. :D
  • Hmm very amusing. They were breaded mushrooms and the breaded bit wasn't hot to the touch, only warm. It was also the only mushroom out of the batch that had liquid in it.

Mushrooms have a high water content, plus the fact they were garlic mushrooms might have given away the fact that there may be liquid inside them - ie, garlic butter.
  • Should breaded mushrooms have a liquid in it? I've never had any so don't know.

I assume they were microwaved a little too much and the liquid - whatever it was - caught the heat and scalded you.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • As I said, there was only one with liquid in so perhaps I wasn't to assume there were be liquid in them and as I said the breaded bit wasn't hot (at all) therefore you wouldn't expect the inside to be of such a burning temperature.

I agree they microwaved them too long (they admitted this themselves).

What I want is advice on whether I am entitled to receive any form of compensation, not advice on how to eat them ;)

Compensation; absolutely how much do want?
  • An acknowledgement, apology and refund of our meal. If I haven't a leg to stand on I won't bother. This is why i'm asking advice

Firstly, breaded mushrooms are deep fried not microwaved. If they were microwaved they would have been soggy.

Secondly, what is the world coming to when we complain if our food is too hot!!!!!

If I order cooked food, i EXPECT it to be hot, not cold.
Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!

Breaded mushroom are always like this.

Have you ever cooked a mushroom? when you heat it liquid comes out, they are like 95% water.

What i do is cut them in half first.

What i would suggest the pub in question does. "Just say hot food may burn, if you do not know how to eat please ask the waiter"

next time order the baked alska, but do not complain when you get brain freeze
