DMZ = De Militarised Zone. It's basically one IP address on your network you choose all the unrouted port assigned incoming traffic to go to. The option for this will be somewhere in your main router's settings.

Hiya Saeed, would it be possible to provide us with details of your modem. Make, model etc. Then maybe able to walk you through the settings. I use a safecom ADSL router but the setup for DMZ will be different than your ADSL modem.

I bought the Netgear TA612V thanks to the tip from the OP. I have connected it up as cable modem> Netgear > Computer with phone in socket 1. I am on Telewest. I do not have a router or anything. Only the above three things are connected.

I went ot the site and registered and got a phone number, switched off modem, Netgear and computer. Then switched them on in the reverse order. But I get no dial tone at all. I just get a hissing sound then it starts bleeping after 10 seconds.

When I go into the router (by going to http://192.168.61.1) I get the following:-

    LAN Port
MAC Address 00:0F:B5:13:XX:XX (last 4 figures deleted)

    Line 1
    Display Name UNAVAILABLE
    Telephone Number phonenumber
    Line 1 Status
    Hook State: ON
    Registration State: Idle
    Message Waiting: NO

Any help would be appreciated as I have spent about a day setting it up, switching off and on but to no avail.

No sure if this has been mentioned but you can use https://www.call18185.co.uk on sipgate. This means 4p no limit landline calls at weekends. Edit: actually there are different rates for 0808 users http://www.call18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php

Saeed. I haven't used cable but my guess is that you shouldn't need to change any settings in the cable modem.

Try this. if you have already gone to https://www.sipgate.co.uk/netgear typed in your mac address and setup your phone line on your netgear ta612v, turned it off and turned it on again. Try going back to that site and click "open firmware" link putting in your mac address. Turn off when told then turn on and leave it a good 5-10 minutes as turning it off or fiddling with it while the firmware is updating will break it.

WHen finished go back to ta612v options, voip settings and check the stun tickbox and let it restart.

Yes, you've registered, but you now need to go back to the sipgate site.

You then need to login with your username/password, then choose your hardware (i.e. the netgear) and go through the configuration of typing in your mac address, etc. It'll then send out the data to your netgear voip unit, and will take 5-10m to set itself up, do NOT turn it off whilst its doing this! Then when its all rebooted and back to normal, all green, AND detected the phone connected to port 1, THEN you can pick up the phone and hopefully get a dial tone.

Took me a while to work out that I had to go back to the sipgate site!

    Hi,

I just registered Netgear TA612V on Sipgate website as instructed. Everything seems done unless there is no LED light for the Phone 1 port (the Internet and PC lights are on however and surfing the internet through it is fine). When I lift the handset I can hear nothing either. It keeps silent.

In the installation guide, it says when the light is off, "the port is disabled of the power is off".

I am using this in the university study bedroom whose internet LAN was connected via cable. Anyone knows how to solve this problem? Cheers.

Yes I am. The net just works fine through it. I try rebooting the Netgear device a few times but the Phone LED still doesn't turn on.

Whats halls are you in, not nottingham by any chance is it ?

You need ports open in the firewall to get it to work unfortuantely, So im doubtful you will get it running in the uni, Unless there tech deperatment will open up the ports for you
