selling your stuff on Amazon - part 7 - advice for newbies in the first post

  • I have just had my first 'multiple' sale through Amazon.

OK so it is only for 2 x 1p books but gratefully received nontheless especially as I am now only 2 short of my 30 target for November!

My question is that these are really thin light books and will probably still go at letter rate (costing 65p).

I don't feel I can accept the full £5.50 that this chap has paid in P&P fees from Amazon, so I would like to give a partial refund - my query is how much do folks feel is a fair refund? Should I give a full £2.75 (ie one books worth) or less?

I would refund a little bit, maybe £1 - but explain why, in the first post, part 2 I have copied my 'explanation'

well done on the target BTW!

But - I didn't get any kind of confirmation email from Amazon and it was only when I was casually checking my listings today that I thought - hmm, I thought I had one more book than that, and it was sold over a week ago. So I have rapidly fired off a grovelling apologetic message to the buyer and will despatch tomorrow. How come Amazon don't tell you that you've sold something? I'm a bit annoyed... anyone else have this problem?

Emails do go astray so to be sure you don't miss any orders log in every day to your Seller Account then 'Your Marketplace Orders' and you can handle everything from there.

Click on the order ID and it brings up a packing list and delivery label for you to print off and you can contact your buyer.

    Hi,

I think it often depends when the DVD was released. Amazon will sometimes like to sell the DVD themselves at launch, before allowing others to sell through their site (this is my view - not fact!!). The same often happens with new release CD's - can't sell for a few days after release.

Looking on the site now Cars can't be sold but Little Mermaid can.

    Does this help?

Yes thanks. It is the Cars DVD I am trying to sell. I have sold about a dozen items now with good feedback so they know I am not new to it. I'll try the dreaded eBay instead!
  • My sales have been terrible this month, but I have just sold another book :j - a children's one. Only problem is it is right on the borderline of the large letter width - I was going to do online postage, but not sure now if I should wait another day and go to the post office - does anyone know if Royal Mail are charging people for mis-sizing their postage - I remember someone mentioning an amnesty in the first few months (or was that a strange dream I had?!)

Book is too wide to go into any of my jiffy envelopes, so I am wrapping it in bubble wrap and brown paper. I do have some very thin foam type stuff which was used in packaging for a shelf unit we bought, however as the book is a very thin, paperback children's book, not sure if using foam would be a good idea, as I guess there is more chance of it being damaged??

The difference between large letter 65p and packet £1.27 is quite a bit, when the profit on the book is minimal anyway...

Thanks for any guidance anyone can give.

Personally I would go for the foam, it should protect it just fine, I use that thin foam too and never had a problem. Also I would risk it if it is on the brink because I always do, I do my own online postage and I am very generous with myself and have never had to pay extra postage, and I know my customers would have said something if they had to pay the surcharge, I think they give more leeway then people think.

However, that is just my opinion, I would be of the risky sort.

  • Hi Bella, I use 2 or 3 layers of foam with plastic mailers or if it's too large I use thick plastic from boutique carrier bags, I haven't heard from buyers that there has been any problems.
Will the book actually go in a post box? my local post box is a silly little one on a pole...
I haven't seen any posts about buyers having problems with underpriced parcels so maybe there is an amnesty?

I got a book from a marketplace seller this morning (what do you mean I'm only supposed to be selling them :o ) and it was in a cardboard envelope sort of 'book shape'. I was really impressed as it seems very secure and stops the book getting knocked, yet adds no real depth to the book to lose the ability to send it as a large letter.

I'd just sold a book of a similar size (another one ...hurrah!) so recycled it as the envelope was completely unmarked and the label easily peeled off, and got my local PO to send a standard size novel as a large letter rather than as a package as usual. I wonder if these cardboard mailers are expensive, I'm going to try and track them down.

I'm a few books over target now which of course means I really should have taken out the pro seller thingy, but I can't believe this roll is going to last.

    Good luck to you all!

    Hi everyone :hello:

Today is my first day of being an Amazon seller. Read through all the helpful advice here, (thank so much everyone) and listed 33 books today.

One of them I got the confirmation email at 2.45pm and sold it at 3.10pm. Result!

So, again, just wanted to say thanks!
