Unbelievable.
Well we all know where NOT to go for a new motor, eh John?
Tell Hartwell to take a long look at this thread, OP. Then tell them that MoneySavingExpert is one of the top ten UK websites visited daily ... by people who want recommendations on how to wisely spend their money .... or not ....
Then tell Hartwell that it is quite likely that one of us will come here daily and make sure that their ... ahem ... n a m e or rather the discussion of the apparent worth of it in this thread, appears near the top of the list daily until the OP gets some proper remedy.

I have had some real old "dogs" in the past, things which would never need an oil change because they needed topping up regularly, but this case is extreme. Five litres in a few weeks is mad!
Assuming that it has no leaks, this kind of oil consumption should be obvious, simply by doing an emissions test. The other thing which will be affected is the CAT, which will probably be ruined.
If I was the OP, I would be demanding a full refund, and compensation for all the trouble it has caused.0 -
So would I, and I wouldn't leave the premises until it was sorted.0

I recently bought a 2002 Astra through the motor trade with 99k miles on it and full vauxhall history. Bodywork superb, interior superb, long MOT - all seemed well. It had a bit of tax so i thought i'd drive it myself for a week or two whilst i was advertising it to sell on. I noticed on occassions it dropped down onto 3 cylinders BUT most interestingly it used 4.5 litres of oil in the two weeks i drove it. No blue smoke at tick over, only on hard revs. There were no obvious symptoms of burning oil. Otherwise drove to perfection. I had my mechanic have a look at it it and he believes the oil rings on the pistons are knackered - basically the rings stop oil getting up into the combustion chamber, thus its burning the oil off while its burning fuel. He reckons that modern engines, if overheated *can* cause the rings to lose tension.
This might be the case with this Focus too. It certainly will need a major strip down of the engine and rebuild to resolve. Personally i'd be looking my money back / exchange car.0 -

Are you saying that if we keep on using the name Hartwell then this thread will come up high on the results list if you search for Hartwell?0 -
Is that Hartwell the well known car dealer?0

The car went back to the Garage yesterday morning, ive phoned today to find out whats happening with it and they have told me it has gone back to phoenix engines (this was the place where the valves were done). So now its just a waiting game to see whats wrong and how long its gonna take to get it repaired.Sealed Pot Challenge member #982
