make sure they fit a factory exchange engine with full warranty and not some 100k bag of nails (technical term) from a scrapyard. If they refuse tell them to keep the car and you’ll have your money back and go elsewhere.

they wouldn't authorise the strip down elsewhere because they didn’t fancy contributing to another firms profit

I hope they don't pull a second hand Focus engine and stick it on.

Also, Focus's are usually hammered by young drivers, so no doubt the engine has been hammered good and the cylinder, as already said, is failing!

It'll be a reconditioned lump at best, which is an acceptable way of doing things, and is the case with many complex car componants. Worst case scenario they'd have sourced a written-off Focus from a scrap yard, although if they're reputable, I sincerely hope they webt for the former!
  • Got the car back on 5th November and everything seemed to be going ok ............. that was until today!!!

Today I went to go shopping and the oil warning light came on. So checked the oil levels and nothing whatsoever is registering on the dipstick, infact the dipstick is dry!!!

Unfortunately no one is answering the phone at the garage so nothing I can do till Monday.

Im fuming!!! What could make the car guzzle oil?

PS the original fault was 2 faulty valves which have supposidly been repaired.

I think it is a joke in 2010 that a company like Hartwells should treat its customers like unsuspecting punters arriving at Butlins

I think it's a joke in 2010 that the motor trade is not far more regulated than it is, they seem to be able to get away with murder. The kind of service I'd expect from the dodgy 2nd hand place down the road seems to have infected the large dealers and they get away with it time and time again
  • If they've repaired 2 valves I guess it could be the stem seals causing you to lose oil.Presuming they filled it up in the 1st place.

What happened to the new engine?

When did you last check the oil? Did you check it when you had the car delivered back, always a good idea because you can't trust anyone to do a job right.

Just because it's not on the dipstick doesn't mean there is no oil in there. Measure exactly how much oil you put in to bring the oil up to level.

Please re-read! "full service history and 1 previous owner that was an oldish bloke who only used the car to run to and from the shop."

The bit about running to the shop and back could, of course could be part of the original problem?
Maybe it hasn't "guzzled" oil and was not filled to the mark in the first place.

God save us from more regulation

The Sale of Goods and other consumer laws are very powerful bit of legislation. The problem is that consumers don't understand & use them
