a huge and shameful 5lb gain this week
I know I've not been well behaved, especially for the first half of the week, but 5lbs is unjustified.
If one pound gain is equivalent to an extra 3500 calories, then after totting up the extra calories that Ive eaten over the whole week I would expect to have gained between 1 and 1.5 lbs
I'm putting it down to hydration and also to food "in the tubes" so to speak. Whatever the reason though, at the next weigh in... those scales owe me four pounds and I want payback!
  • You are right, though, that all jewish festivals are food based - it's why diabetes is so prevalent in jewish families!!!!

Having taken root the tendency for develop diabetes is inherited. It came to DH down both sides of his family. His mother died of the effects of diabetes and after she'd lost her sight because of it. All the cousins that we know of have it to a greater or lesser degree, and his bro. (NB: many of the cousins we do NOT know because he committed the unpardonable sin in marrying his non-Jewish first wife - they cut him out completely). So far his children have not developed it - they are obviously half-Jewish.

Can I just put right one little point. Christmas is NOT supposed to go on for ever. In fact, Christmas has not yet even started. We are still in Advent, a four-week period of preparation, prayer, fasting and generally putting your life in order as you would do if you were expecting an honoured guest who might be a bit critical of the way you've lived and the things you've done or not done.

Christmas actually starts at midnight on Christmas Eve, that will be next Friday night. It's only in recent years that we've had it rammed down our throats for weeks on end, for commercial reasons and getting earlier every year. In the series 'Victorian Farm' on the Yesterday channel I was reminded of what it was like in my childhood. The house got a thorough cleaning on Christmas Eve and then the tree and the greenery for decoration (a left-over from pre-Christianity!) were brought in just as darkness started to fall. We never had trees, decorations up for weeks beforehand, and they'd be taken down on Epiphany, which is also Twelfth Night. The Twelve Days of Christmas are afterwards, not before, and they end on 6th January.

I can't bear what Christmas has become, that's why I've opted out of it as much as is possible without living in a hole!!

Anyway, STS for me this week. Not to worry. It is happening slowly, but it is happening, that's the main thing.

  • Feasting has been part of th human psyche for millenia so it is only natural to find it difficult not to partake of what is a form of human bonding really.
Unfortunately, as efrieze says, xmas now goes on for about 5 weeks in terms of food and also of course, so much of it is also available all year round, it isn't a treat on the same way as the 'old days'.

The board always goes quieter at this time of year and manic in early Jan:D. This is my 4th xmas on the board:eek::D.

Sorry some so many of you are struggling and can I apologise for my -4lb loss this week please Fred...

This means I have now lost 1 stone this autumn.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

    Damn, I'm up to 10,10 - I think that's a gain of 3lb :(

I was right about totm tho, so hopefully it's a phantom gain. Going to do Davina again today - am really getting into it. Shame I can't suspend my gym account till the sun comes out again.
Can I just put right one little point. Christmas is NOT supposed to go on for ever.....

It's only in recent years that we've had it rammed down our throats for weeks on end, for commercial reasons and getting earlier every year.

Agree! I think it's awful that we are encouraged to get into the Xmas mood in november!! Also, productivity at work usually takes a massive nosedive throughout December as a result, as everyone thinks 'oh it's christmas now' even when it's not even mid december!!

On the other hand...I love love love putting the tree up at the beginning of Dec. It's such an expensive and time consuming holiday now, with presents and travelling all over to see different parts of the family, that I really enjoy the time I have in my own house in the lead up the the day itself, with my tree out and the lights on, making me feel all warm and cosy and relaxed. If I waited till nearer Christmas day I'd barely be in the flat enough to appreciate the efforts of decorating.

I would love to have Xmas day at my house, with just my OH one year. But unfortunately it seems that until you have kids of your own you are required to travel all around to everyone else's house. I hate leaving the house empty at xmas and the pets on their own. And I hate living out of a bag for 4 days in a row and staying in various different beds.
    Ugh, rant over!!

Making some bread this morning, in the 'new' breadmaker. I'm using the SW approved wholemeal flour (MrT's) so it should fit in with the plan.

Going to try to be 'sensible' today after yesterday's choc fest (I can't blame Xmas, I get like it every month!)

dont make me say it.... a STS is better than a gain!!! (esp given you've been feeling extra hungry recently like the rest of us) and hey 1lb of muscle is a good thing - fat loss + muscle gain = STS!

Hmm, me thinks this was not the best day to try to get back on the wagon - today I am making a practice round of choc brownies ahead of xmas and testing out my breadmaker!!
