Regarding fat genes: Im convinced that there must be some reason why in my family, me, my dad and my grandfather are/were all >25st. Ok, it may not be genetics, i dont know, but I doubt it's just coincidence either.Eric_Pisch wrote: »There is some genetics to it and there is some physiological addiction to it as well, but the hardest part is accepting if we do not put food in our gobs our body will not get fat, as i keep preaching thou getting your insulin under control makes this vastly easier.
I broadly agree with Eric, I fully accept that genetic predisposition to many things is a significant cause, be it alcoholism, depression, homosexuality or even obesity, mixed with a healthy dose of enviromental factors to varying degrees.
From my personal experience, a whole family being overweight is a lot more to do with their eating habits, which you do get from your family than a cookie that puts on 10lbs.
What irritates me is those who rely on a genetics excuse, everyone has a predisposition to something or other, some more than others, but you just need to have a stronger will power, know how your body works, ie you need more exercise than the average person.
Than again, I also think depression and anxiety is a major cause in obesity, so I know its not as simple as shouting 'run fatty run'.
All the stories I have heard from ex fatties, even those who swore it was genetic, was that once they thought about it, they really did overeat by massive amounts. The scale of increase in obesity to me, is the most damning evidence that genetics is not the main cause.0 -

I think there probably is a degree of genetic influence, in that you inherit body shape and metabolism.
However, there's also a genetic element to susceptibility in general - some people are more prone to overeating, or more likely to have an emotional attachment to food. Just as the child of an addict will be likely to inherit a susceptibility to addiction, the child of an overeater will be likely to succumb to overeating too. There is a high chance that the child of a schizophrenic will also develop the illness, and in much the same way, the child of an obese person will be likely to be obese - because of the behavioural element involved with a predisposition to overeat. However the difference there is that obesity is, for the mostpart, a problem that can be 'cured' by changing behaviours and thought processes, so you can tackle it, however I believe that the underlying predisposition to overeat will always remain.
So in other words, you dont have a gene that makes you fat itself, but you probably have inherited a personality trait that has influenced you to behave in a certain way.
EDIT: oh Denning we posted at the same time! I agree with a lot of what you've said there.Betty B: The Eternal Procrastinator....

Flis - wowzers! what a result for you!:T
It is a lot to lose right away, but it's good to see that you know it's probably just the 'first week' effect.
The water chart in the kitchen sounds like a good idea, I am always forgetting to drink water! (too busy chucking hot milky tea down my throat!)Betty B: The Eternal Procrastinator....

Another 1.8 lbs loss for me which brings me to 49lbs or 3 and a half stone since 17th June. Just missed my 50lbs target this week but onwards to next week....almost half way there...
Well done Flis - that is amazing! and well done Eric too - yay for being obese!0 -
only 1/2 a lb
Seriously unimpressed with your shape evolved for the xbox it recommended a post pregnancy work out for me
That's enough to give you post-natal depression!
Congratulations to Flis and Eric. Fantastic results for both of you. Flis, you aren't missing a limb by any chance, are you?
Eric, I told my OH of your latest achievement (I've been giving him updates about you over the months) and he says you've lost the equivalent of him, and was really impressed. He's like you and gets all science about energy, fitness, protein, weights, etc., so has been really interested with your progress.
Looks like I'm going to become a gym member again from today, so in order to get my money's worth out of the £50 p/m it's going to cost my BF, I had better start getting my bum up there regularly. I'm going to look at the early morning swimming too, but need to know I can trust the children to get themselves up and dressed without me here first!
I've had my 1st weigh in now, and was amazed to have lost 6lb this week. I do think some of the weight was my shoes though, as I took them off this week, but I'm still declaring the 6! :rotfl: Oh and get this, best of all my son has lost 5.5lb! He also took his shoes off, but in our defence, everyone else was doing it, so we thought it was the rule.:oOne day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing
Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home0 -

Ooh - just realised I am nearly overweight (bmi-wise) - just another few lbs to go.
Targets for the rest of 2010
1lb to 50lbs and 50% of the way there
6lbs to 'Overweight'
7lbs to 4 stone loss
11lbs to 60lbs loss
I can make it so that almost every week I hit one target or other!
I think i can lose 11lbs in the last 6 weeks of 2010.
What are all your targets???0 -
