I hardly ever send MMS's but did notice they were being charged and I don't ever remember recieving any information that they were going to be chargeable.

I thought nothing of it, but now I think back I'm sure I never used to be charged before a few months ago.

I was on an 18 months contract until March this year, when I changed to a simplicity monthly deal.

Not a biggy for me as I say I rarely send them.

Ah, that is one of the things though, my simplicity is £19.99 yours maybe £20, what difference a penny?
But I do recall that the simplicity tariffs were different and didn't include the mms or video calls, I think on network calls were un-metered though :o

Emailed them to get it confirmed and this is what I got

    Hello Shoe girl

Thanks for getting in touch about the text message you've received from
    our end.

Be assured, you'll not be charged for sending picture message as you're
on old tariff. You'll start getting charged for sending text and picture
message once you exceed your inclusive allowance.

I'd request you to please ignore the text message you've received from
our end. These messages are mainly for the customers who have been using
iOS4 on their iPhone4/3G/3Gs these customers will start to be charged
20p (inc. VAT) for each MMS they send.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused due to this matter.

I hope you'll find the above information useful.

    Kind regards

Why on earth would using iOS4 on any of the phones be regarded as a change to someones contract? It doesn't result in having to alter the contract with O2. Out of curiosity, which OS are you using on your iPhone?

It's a iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.1, tried on the phone confirming the first paragraph was right but it was like I was asking for nxt weeks lottery numbers. I'm going to try again later when they are open and hopefully I'll get a good person this time.
  • Nobody's T&C have changed, from the 21st of June to the 25th of Oct, some iPhone users (those with iOS4) weren't getting charged anything for sending MMS, but the promotional period will be over tomorrow.

If you're on a 2010 tariff with unlimited texts you'll be charged 25p for MMS which is what you signed up for (you can view your older bills at http://www.o2.co.uk/myo2 to see what you've been charged in the past). If you're on an older tariff with an allowance for text messages it'll go back to taking 4 off your allowance for every MMS you send.

By the sounds of it the text message went to everybody on an iPhone tariff, including those who still had a finite SMS allowance and those who haven't even upgraded to iOS4.
  • The wife is currently in the Canaries and sending me regular texts and the odd picture message. She is on a sim only contract with unlimited UK texts, how much will she get charged for sending texts and picture messages back to the UK ?

    Many thanks in advance

Thanks to the recent EU roaming legislation it'll be pretty much the standard rate, 10p to text (no cost to receive) and 25p per MMS for more info see http://www.o2international.co.uk/standardrate_and_data.aspx

Please don't confuse things any more. An iPhone 3G or 3GS can also have iOS4 as it is software related. They mean people who have taken out iPhone 4 (hardware).

I have an iPhone 3GS with iOS4.0, and am on the old iPhone plan. I got the text but was assured this was in error.

    We'll see tomrrow.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

I'm not, it effected all users with iOS4.*, I know at least 2 3GS users that were getting free MMS during this period.
