The address at the previous post is the correct one for general PAYE correspondence.

My wife works as a vet nurse and has to cleam her uniform at home.

We wrote to the tax office and they eventually replied saying that her tax code was already adjusted for this.

However my wife is now needing to complete Self Assessment (SA)tax returns and this works out that she owes tax to HMRC

I am wondering if this is due to the tax code already being adjusted for her work uniform, meaning her employer takes less tax off her. But when you enter details into SA, it doesn't ask for tax code and gives everyone the same tax allowance.

Has anyone else needed to complete SA and claimed for this?

Would we have to put this into the allowances section of the employment section?

    Thanks

Yes. But if the underpayment is more than £20 (allowance of £100) then it's not that giving rise to it.
If she's mainly PAYE ? ....... Student Loan repayments often cause oddities when translated to SA.

I see what you mean, the underpayment is about £25 (I know its only small, but we really hate giving anything to the tax man!)

In which case it does appear to be the uniform allowance. It will mainly or wholly disappear once you add the allowance (see her Coding notice) to the SA

Yes £20 off, leaving £4 left

I believe this might have happened in previous years (allowance added to tax code but SA takes it back off again)

As we have claimed this before, guess we can just phone them up to get it back for previous years?

I think you would need to amend the SA Returns to do that .... as they supercede the PAYE

See post #945. The allowance is in the form of tax relief ..... so there's no point having more of it if you're not paying tax?

Or are you implying you were a taxpayer at some point when the allowance may have been relevant?
