Can I still claim this for years where I haven't paid tax as I was earning under the limit for the year?

It would be pointless. It is tax relief you are claiming. So there is no benefit to having more of that (it effectively increases your personal allowance) if you weren't paying tax? As you can't get back what you haven't paid.

The same response as post #923, I'm afraid. If you're not paying tax (inc elsewhere) then there's nothing to reclaim?

  • I wear a uniform as an unpaid volunteer for a registered charity and tried to claim a tax rebate on my occupational pension, since I obviously have no income from the charity against which to claim.

    HMRC refused my application.
  • Hi all, I read with interest the post regarding claiming expenses for laundering uniforms etc and without hesitation on 7/7/2011, I drew up a letter to the taxman claiming for 6 years worth of cleaning my company overalls. Today, 31/12/2011, I received a letter from HMRC thanking me for my letter and that they, (HMRC) view the following amounts: £45 for tax years up to 2007/2008, £60 for the tax years 2008/2009 onwards, as being reasonable amounts yearly deduction for laundering uniforms and protective clothing. I was feeling a sense of victory over the taxman :) until I read the next paragraphs of the letter which read: " You have completed self assessment returns for the years covered in your letter. The time limit for amending your returns is 1 year after the 31 January following the end of the year of the return, so for example, you had until 31 January 2011 to amend your 2008/2009 return. Your 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 returns have been amended to include relief for expenses of £60 and calculations will be sent to you. For years out of time to amend, you may be eligible to claim Overpayment Relief. Any such claim must be in a specific format. I enclose a form you can use for this. It lists the time limits. It is too late to claim for 2006/7 and earlier" :(
So my interpretation of this letter means that if you fill out a self assessment form you are only able to claim for the current tax year and previous 2 years unlike normal taxpayers who can claim 6 years, and I have until April 2012 to claim for 2007/2008 using the Overpayment Relief form giving me a total of 4 years assuming my Overpayment Relief claim is successful
It may be an idea to amend the "Work uniform tax rebates" web page to inform money savers that fill in self assessment forms.
  • Hi, im a little confused as to how much i can claim back, i work in the electrical industry, and have been working with my company since 2008.

Now it says i can claim back £60 a year, but can i claim that whole £60 or is it 20% of that £60 being £12 per year. What do i put in the letter? that i wish to claim £48 or £240 for the time ive been with my company?

    any help would be appreciated

    regards

You can only claim back the tax, eg, £12 a year.

See the letter at the beginning of this thread.

    Hi all,

I;m sorry if this question has been asked before but is it worth my other half getting in touch with hmrc if only his jumper has the company logo? He does wash his uniform at home and he works at the airport (not a pilot though)

    Thanks :)

  • Theres no harm in asking, my company supplies me with shirts, jumpers and tabards with the company logo but I have to supply my own trousers and I was still able to claim back £230 from them. So long as his company doesn't provide a laundry service I don't see why he wouldn't be able to claim back some money.

  • Definitely worth doing. I saw this and sent off on behalf of my husband who wears a uniform for work. He has received a £396 rebate but by means of alteration to his Tax Code for this year. (A cheque would have been nice). But now he has claimed he will get the allowance annually. :)
