Wash your uniform at home ?

After attempting to claim a tax rebate (3 times), I was politely told (3 times) that it is not possible for the Armed Forces to claim Tax relief because all serving personnel receive free laundry services. After showing the relevant documentation (tri-service publication (JSP 886)) I was told politely that I was still ineligible. This may be viewed as discrimination? Undeterred I wrote to my MP and after a number of weeks received a reply. He expressed his concerns and forwarded all my correspondence with his letter (of which I have a copy) to George Osborne. I await a response but my advice to all my comrades, do not be undeterred at the first hurdle, do the same, write to your MP stating HMRC will not accept your claim with all your supporting evidence.
I personally think it's a disgrace when all uniformed organisations (within the rules mentioned in this website) receive some form of tax relief and the Armed Forces only benefit when on operations/deployed units/certain key roles. Maybe HMRC think we don't wear our uniforms when at our home base?0 -
Hello
I claimed for the tax rebate of washing my uniform at home sent a letter and waited and waited in the end I phoned them up and they informed me I was already receiving the tax allowance, How do I know if this is correct ?? I work in retail one of the big supermarkets
Thanks0 -
After 3 letters backwards and forwards, I've just had ANOTHER letter asking me MORE questions! I'm beginning to think of giving up, but another part of me says "You've gone this far, make them pay!"
What they are asking for now is:
"It is unclear whether or not your uniform bears the company logo. Please ask your company to confirm this fact and forward the appropriate paperwork to us. We can then assess your claim."
What makes me angry is that I clearly specified everything in the first letter, but yet, the first letter I got back was a set of questions asking about things I already gave the answers to in my first letter! Things like "Does your company provide laundry facilities?". Grrrr!
I really don't want to have to speak to management and ask them to write me a letter saying I wear a work uniform with company logo on it. I think the request will either be completely ignored, or I'll be classified as some kind of scrooge (as its basically £1/month). Not sure how to word a response if I don't, though.
Never claimed before, so I'm hoping its worth it for the backpay.0 -
Took me about 20 days to get a response, £543 tax back (inc interest), and tax code amended.
Very easy to do, make sure you provide your employee number, full dates you are claiming from, the industry you work in, and state no washing facilties are available (if that the case).
Good luck!0 -
My letter has been sent. FINGERS CROSSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!0

I work for the Ambulance service and I also get (I think) 70% of tax back from my Unison subscription as well as uniform allowance. Worth trying this also as it maybe a few extra pennies in the pot!!0

you need to check your payslip - basic tax code this year is 747L, if it is higher than this then the allowance is being applied, when I worked in retail I use to get a form from the tax office every year showing the tax code for the forthcoming tax year. I am sure I did not have to claim this and it was applied automactically, and when I moved out of retail it was deducted automatically.0 -

Can I still claim this for years where I haven't paid tax as I was earning under the limit for the year?
I am currently working lots more hours now so will start paying tax again so can I send it off before this happens?
I'm not sure if I claimed it for the other 7 years I worked at my company full time :O0
