But I am still confused - are you saying you are entitled to claim, for example 2010 -11 £60.00 a year but this is then taxed so you would really only get £12.00?
No. The £60 is an allowance .... which is normally added to your Personal Allowance (£7475) in the current year. Which means (£60 x 20% = £12) £60 more of your cash is not taxed - so you save £12 in the year?
For closed years - you get the £12 as a direct refund (plus repayment supplement = interest) if you ask specifically. In your case it looks as though they've added the entirety (747L to 787L = £400 extra) to this years Code number (£400 x 20% = £80) meaning you will pay £80 less (approx). The £400 includes £60 for 2011-12?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
so if this is the case this £60 allowance should be like me saving £60 so they would entitle me to £60 a year extra on top of the normal rate of £7475. I can't see were the £12 fits in. I just want to know if I am entitled to claim a refund0

Sorry - don't follow that.
If the allowance stays at £60 - then that will be added to your personal allowance for the year. And you will pay £12 less per year in tax - whilst your tax level is 20%.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
so from their calculations they owe me £67.15 over six year period0

Yes. But the £12 for this year (to apr 2012) makes it £79.15.
To give you that back they appear to have increased your current Code number by around £400 (look at the P2 you should have).
£400 tax less at 20% - then gives you £80 less tax paid this year.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
dunno what you mean by p2 - but to be honest £12 a year no wonder nobody bothers0

Good question - somebody at work said one could claim for clothing being washed by myself (at home) they said it would be £60 a year seemed worth having. And why should the TAX man have your money (I've worked for 25 years +) The tax man's always been the winner

Further good question then.
Why should someone with a logo on a shirt get tax relief for washing it. When it has to be done anyway - and everyone without a logo gets no help?
You've misunderstood the £60. But I'd be grateful of the £12.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Understand where you're coming from, but then again the HMRC don't really know if you're logo or not, and however if you look at this another way them with money (who can afford accountants) seem to claim for all kinds of stuff - you must agree
So I thought it would be worth a stamp – but £12 is better than nothing but it’s been a lot of effort for me. you have helped me understand the TAX system - this has been an eye opener for me and I appreciate your help.
