The 'catch all' category ('employees who are not covered by a nationally agreed flat rate expense'). You can claim £60.

If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Just ring HMRC I did today for having the wrong tax code, told them I was a helth care professional and got relief for union subscrptions, NMC, Journal subscriptions, laundry and tights/stockings!!! I haven;t wore tights and stockings at work for about 12 years as most uniforms are now trousers. The chap said it was for legwear!!! Tax code increased from 747 to 776! Not that i currently have a job but will do soon!!

This looks like about a years worth of these costs to me. If you've been doing the job for a number of years you are probably due a rebate too, however HMR&C don't usually give these over the phone.

    I work for HMRC :

    1) You work wear must have a logo on it.

What about the situation where you only wear logo'd clothing when out on company business, but not generally when office based (ie only about 10% of the time)?

I filled in the form to get a refund for washing my clothes - just had a letter back and this is how they worked mine out Tax code was 747L now its 787L
Tax Year Claim Rate.........Repayment Interest ..Total
    2005 -06 45.00 x 22.00% = £9.90 .......£0.73 ......£10.63
    2006 -07 45.00 x 22.00% = £9.90 .......£0.39 ......£10.29
    2007 -08 45.00 x 22.00% = £9.90 .......£0.12 ......£10.02
    2008 -09 45.00 x 22.00% = £12.00 .....£0.13 ......£12.13
    2009 -10 45.00 x 22.00% = £12.00 .....£0.07 ......£12.07
    2010 -11 45.00 x 22.00% = £12.00 .....£0.01 ......£12.01
    Total Repayment ...............................................£67.15
I thought I would get back £45 (a year) for 3 years and then £60 (a year) for the other 3 years which is about £315.00
Can anyone put me right on this & is this correct

Have another look, I think you have transcribed the column of calculations incorrectly. (or the laws of mathematics changed in 08/09;))

    I think you meant this:

If U work off EIM32485(Other expenses: clothing: the cost of upkeep and replacement of uniform and protective clothing: laundry costs) then I am entitled to:

    2010/11 - £60
    2009/10 - £60
    2008/09 - £60
    2007/08 - £45
    2006/07 - £45

That is the amount of money you are expected to spend in water soap and heating (plus a bit of depreciation on the washing machine) to keep the kit you must wear to keep your job. The tax on that is 22 or 20% (unless you are higher paid).

As a fellow tax payer, I am happy with the idea that you should not be taxed on the money you are forced to spend on clothes that are not suitable for every day wear - but I don't see the logic in paying for the clothes that you wear to work. If anyone else should be paying for those then it is your employer.
If you were working for (say) Eddie Stobart, I rather think your employer would be paying?

It was early hours when I posted it should have been
Tax Year Claim Rate......... Repayment Interest ..Total

    2008 - 09 60.00 x 20.00% = £12.00 .....£0.13 ......£12.13
    2009 - 10 60.00 x 20.00% = £12.00 .....£0.07 ......£12.07
    2010 - 11 60.00 x 20.00% = £12.00 .....£0.01 ......£12.01

But I am still confused - are you saying you are entitled to claim, for example 2010 -11 £60.00 a year but this is then taxed so you would really only get £12.00?
