I've read a lot (a LOT!) of these posts but I can't find quite what I'm looking for so am hoping someone will be able to give me an answer please.

My OH is an electrician and wears clothes provided by the company. These are only used for work and are washed at home.

The company consists of three people, and the boss is a good friend. If we claim a rebate for this, will the company incur any cost? Whilst we'd love some money back, we don't want to do anything to cause difficulties at work.

Also, if we do claim, how much should we put down? The list has a section for electrical supply (or some wording along those lines) but there are two sub-sections within that and I can't make any sense of it.

Does anyone have any advice please?
  • I haven't read back to see if it has already been mentioned, but if you work for Royal Mail you are NOT entitled to a tax rebate for your uniform. Oh well, worth a try
  • As a food handler i have to wear clean uniform daily and cannot wear it outside of work. As i work on an RAF base i have access to their laundry service but its weekly and we have only been given 3 sets of whites to wear. Can i claim or will the fact the laundry service is there to use go against me even though my working pattern is 10 on 4 off?

I work for Boots as a sales assistant and I got a rebate.

I got a letter back and an amended tax code in the first week of october...my october payslip (28/10/11) didn't show the change, it still had the old code. Doos anyone know if i have to contact Boots or should it show up in Novembers pay slip (28/11/11)?

new tax code turned up in my Nov payslip...was 747L and now 773L...wohoo :j
  • Hi, I am an assistant manager in A sports shop. We are required by our employer to wear shirt, tie, trousers and smart shoes and I know these items can be worn outside work but we have to attach badges to our clothing leaving marks which are covered by the badge in work but would be noticeable out wor so wouldn't be worn. Can I still claim?

You can try and claim it won't do any harm to ask HMRC can only say no if you want to make a claim goto your nearest Enquiry Centre and use the telephones and if they say no what have you lost.

If you don't try you will never no SO CLAIM!!!!

As I have said you need to have logo work wear and HMRC have a list of companies which are part of it if the company isn't HMRC will either write to the company and ask them or you can ask your company to contact HMRC about being part of it I am not sure how a compnay gets on the list.

Also as said before Martin's newsletter has two big mistakes in it

    1) You must wear logo work wear if you don't you cannot claim it if you do you will be claiming money illegally and may have to pay it back if you are found out.

    2) You do not get a cheque it comes from your tax code do not expect a cheque from HMRC of £174 every year.
  • I'm going to try to claim, worth a go but just a quick question, how do/can i claim back on the past 6 years when I've worked for 3 different companies (in the same type of job that evolves wearing a uniform). Or can i only claim back on the job I'm currently in (for the last 3 years)

    Thanks.

See post #1 on Page 1 of this thread. And adjust the final sentence of the letter to cover the 3 x employers.

    Hi everyone,
I claimed a couple of months back for cleaning my own lab coat, I work for a local authority, and have subsequently received a cheque for £50 and my tax code has been altered resulting in an extra £8 in my paypacket every 4 weeks, result!!!!!!

Unlikely that is purely on account of the laundry allowance. which is typically £60 x 20% = £12 per annum.
