There is no form for this he needs to write to his tax office. The standard cost for washing a uniform for tax purposes is £60 per year, this is normally worth £12 per year in tax relief.

As his employer previously provided washing facilities he won't be able to claim much of a rebate, but he we will continue to receive the benefit of the tax relief in future years.

If the cost of washing his uniform is more than £60 a year he can negotiate a larger allowance but he would have to prove this cost.

If you check this websitte you can get an idea of the amount: http://www.uniformtaxrebate.co.uk/

You need to be a bit creative when looking at the HMRC fixed rate expense allowance list. Would he fit into carpenter or some other type of building trade activity? Always easier to go for a fixed rate deduction which has already beena greed.

I work as a Strength Training Coach and wear clothing provided by my employer but have been washing my own kit for near on 20 years. Only just spotted this thread but can't seem to work out if I fall into the category of workers who can claim back laundry expenses.

Some of our clothing has our employers logo on it but some doesn't and this is simply due to costs of embroidery etc.

    Where do I stand?

It doesn't matter if you are within one of the trades as long as you wear a uniform, there is provision within the rules for those who do not fit one of the trade descriptions:

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32485.htm

It's possible that some of your items of clothing could not be successfully argued as being uniform, however this makes little practical difference in relation to your claim so long as you have items that are uniform - there is a flat rate allowance so it doesn't necessarily relate to the actual cost.

If you have been wearing a uniform for 20 years you can claim a rebate against the costs for the last 6 years.

  • I sent in a letter about 3 weeks ago; I then have been trying to call the Tax Office to see what my situation was!! I was told that as I sent in a letter, itmwould be replied to on July 23rd. because they are 'extremely busy at this time!!!'.
It can be done over the phone but they refused to do it as I had already sent in a letter!!! £60 per annum back to 2005..................give me the cheque please.

Yeah, I wrote to them at the beginning of April and still haven’t heard from them yet. Funny enough I was just thinking of this today too, I’m also starting to wonder if they’ll ever get back to me/send a cheque in the post. Will just have to wait and see I guess.

By the way Clive, when I first applied for this allowance I only got one years after working in the same company a few years. So don't be surprised if you only get £60 in the post [if it arrives].
