Do you not have to file a tax return because of this?

No. They just send you a refund or alter your tax code (you have to tell them which one you want - obviously a payable order gets you the money quicker).

Interesting!! cause if you did then it wouldn't really make sense as most people would need help filling it in and that would mean professional help which would be at least £100 which means you need be given an allowance of more £10 per week to make it worth it!

You can add it on a SA if you are already on SA, but no need if not

I know you can! I was just curious to find out whether they made you do a SA in order to claim the expense. But if you can just ring them or write to them and get it then it is worth doing it cause that will save you at least £60 odd (in tax and is net cash in your pocket) if they agree to give you a £6 a week as allowance

  • We have washing facilities at work, for workshop overalls etc, but wouldn't fancy putting putting my 'branded' office clothing in the same machines! I wonder if I would be entitled to a partial claim?
  • Hi everyone, just found this post & would love your advice!

My sister is a nursery nurse in a private day nursery. She has to wear a specific uniform (which she buys from her employer for £25) it doesn't have her work logo on it but it's a specific fabric print that they must wear - they can't wear anything else. Her employer has a washing machine but it's for work use (washing the childrens clothes etc)

    Could she claim?

Also if she does claim would it affect her working tax credit?

And would they contact her employer or would it have anything to do with them, effect her wage/tax etc as her employers can be ... difficult, she wouldn't want to cause problems

    Cheers guys!

If I was your sister I would put in a claim and see, what can she lose? And it won't effect her Tax credits as thats based on gross wages ie before tax

Hiya, my hubby works in a kitchen as the porter (cleaner) and has to wear sepcific whites/uniform that wouldn't be worn outside ever. He used to be allowed to wash them at work but they stopped letting all staff use the washing machine to wash their uniform.

He's been washing it at home since November, he has to wash it at 90 degrees as it gets caked in grease/fat etc so its always a separate wash from our usual washing.

Is there a form for this or do we just write to our tax office? Is there a going rate per week/year?

He is a worker in the food industry - look at the list of fixed deductions on the HMRC website. No form to complete - just send a letter.
@sophierue, your sister has a claim for the cost of replacement uniforms and footwear. I would claim under nursing staff as the conditions are similar.
